When planning my trip to Ecuador, I looked into what kind of teaching was needed in Ecuador. Like many Spanish speaking countries, they want to learn English from people from the USA. I actually started taking a TEFL course online in the states, but it was too much boring stuff, like how to conjugate verbs, tenses and that stuff I remember not liking in High School.
So that is when I decided to just do volunteer work. But guess what, if you have any kind of skill with children and truly want to make a difference, they will train you and work with you.
I joined a group here called, Gringo Tree. They are expats that put out a short news email everyday about different opportunities in Cuenca. They advertise things for sale, jobs, events and the latest restaurant news. Very nice!
So, in one of their emails, a school called, "Asian American School" advertised for English speaking people to teach Science, Computers, and Art. Well, as soon as saw ART, I knew I wanted to learn more, so I called and made an appointment for an interview!!
The school is a private one that started 4 years ago and is growing. Their goal is to teach Ecuadorian children Spanish as the number one language, English as the number two language and Mandarin as the number three language. The picture is of an actual class room in the school. I am waiting to hear back from them on their choices. Fingers crossed!
When I graduated from High School, I wanted to go to Kutztown College to earn a degree in Art education, but did not have the money or backing and so went on to learn other skills (bookkeeping, massage therapy, NLP, Hypnotherapy, banking) that I truely loved and used in life. Well, I say, never give up on a dream. You never know what can come along.
I will let you know when and if I hear anything from the school.
