Today we had to get up at 5.30 to leave at sixwhich actually wasn't as bad I had thought because I slept like a log. We began by visiting a small beach voce along the shipwreck coast which is famous as the site of a shipwreck where only two people survives. The shipwreck coast part of the Great Ocean Rd is full of stories like that.
The cove its really nice and it was deserted. I think the nice thing about the GOR is that you could literally rock up at any beach and probably have it to yourself. However the guide was telling us that they have quite a lot of accidents. Apparently a lot of these bays and coves have really strong riptides and backpackers who don't know how to read the waves often get swept out. That morning we did have n option to go and see the twelve apostles from a helicopter for about £35.00 which is dead cheap really. I just didn't really want to do it.
The next stop was the other famous land mark the London Bridge, which was a bridge but is now two stone pillars. There is a funny storyhave to tell about his. Apparently on the day the bridge collapsed two people had decided to both bunk of work and go out to the bridge for a picnic. Both of these people were married but not to each other. While they were but there the bridge fell down leaving them stranded on the pillar at the end. This was a major event in Australia not only did the rescue helicopter come to get them but it was accompaniedby all the t.v channels and journalists. Needless to say they were busted !
We then stopped in another bay called the bay of Martyrs fora swim stop. Only one person decided to swim in the 16oC water the rest of were quite happy to just sit and enjoy the beach, which as I said is more beautiful than the 12 apostles. After that we said good bye to the great ocean road and headed towards the Grampians Mountain Ranges.
We arrived at an area called Halls Gap, which is a really cute mountain town full of basic log cabins and camp sites. Again it would be nice to spend a few nights camping in the area if the trip had allowed. Than evening we hiked up onto a point called the pinnacle, which gave us a beautiful view over halls gap and the Grampians. I have definitely become an outdoorsy person because I really really enjoyed being out in the fresh air walking.I do have to tell you about the one member of our group though. This lady from Korea who wore the brightest pink and yellow tracksuit for the whole weekend accompanies by black platform heels, it was hysterical!
That night our accommodation was so nice. It was in a log cabin which was basic and dorm style but it had a lovely kitchen and log fire… not exactly your typical backpackers. We all went to bed early as we had to be up at 5am!
