Well to say the day got off to a rocky start is an understatement! I managed to roll out of bed at 5.30am to get to the Art's Centre For 6.00am pick up which was quite an achievement considering I didn't get to bed until 3am. Fortunately I was staying with Fleur on Exhibition Street in the City Centre so I didn't have too far to go. Well when the OZEX bus pulled up it turned out there was one person too many at that pick up point…. I knew it would be me, it had to be! Turns out that some administrative error had meant that I was booked on the Tuesday trip, but had been told I was on the Saturday trip- I had an email confirming that I was on the Saturday trip so I knew I hadn't just made a mistake! I was then told that because the trip was full I wouldn't be able to travel, so my bags were hauled off the coach. But then! A head count was done and it turns out some Swedish girl hadn't turned upso my bags were put back on the bus and off we trotted!
The first stop was at my favourite place ever, Torquay - home of the originally Quicksilver, Rip curl and O'Neil outlets and now home to the factory outlets! Well I have been very good with limiting my shopping of late so I decided that I would use the hour we had in the area to do a bit of a supermarket sweep style dash around. I did spend probably a bit to much money but it felt good so I don't care!
We then hit the beautiful great ocean road. The drive is so lovely and one day I am going to go back, hire a red open top car and drive along it with a shawl around my head in a glamorous Hollywood movie star fashion. With it being Easter weekend all of the small towns and campsitesalong the G.O.Rdwere full to bursting with many people travelling from all over the world to watch the World Surf Championships which were being held in Bells Beach . We stopped for lunch in a small town called Apollo bay which is really cute. The only downside with doing the G.O rd by tour bus is that you are limited with time in each place, I would love to have just stayed in Apollo bay for a few nights and camped out because the beaches and cafés are so lovely.
After lunch we carried on merrily along the surf coast of the great ocean road and stopped at a few more beauty spots for photos, sorry I have taken so many but I felt obliged to take one everywhere we went. The thing with drives like this is that you get spoilt for beauty so get a bit complacent.
We then headed inward slightly to a tourist attraction called the ottoway fly.Which is basically a flyover walk and big lookout tower in a rainforest. The best part about this is all the stunning birds you get to see,and the amazing colours. Granny would have a field day birds and trees all in one place! Its quite good but I wouldn't fell the need to go again. The thing about Australia is that the landscape changes so quickly. One minute we were on a beautiful coastline, then we headed 10 minutes inward and were in the middle of ranch county then another 10 minutes and were in a temperature rainforest!
We then did a bit of a mad dash back to the G.O rd in order to make it to the famous twelve apostles in time for sunset. When we got there the guide ( Sean) couldn't actually believe how busy it was. He sid never in his life has he seen it so busy. That was the only thing which spoilt the sunset was that there were quite a lot of people there. It was such a nice sunset though, the colours on the rocks and the water were amazing. It would be very romantic if you could ever get the place to yourself. Having said that further along the shipwreck coast is another area called the bay of Martyrs which in my opinion is actually nicer than the twelve apostles. I think it's just so popular because it's the place that all the postcards show.
That nights we stayed in a town called Princeton which had a population of….. sixteen. We had a dorm style accommodation which was nice, and the thing which makes OZEX tours good is that it's a bit more team orientated. For example that night and the next night everyone is asked to help with either the cooking/ washing up / setting up etc. Which forces people to get to know each other.
