We met Flaco who is a friend of our buddy Chris White's from way back when. Originally from Bristol we soon realise 'Flaco' is Spanish for 'Skinny', so yes you guessed it; he's a pretty slim guy but his actual name is Nigel. It was awesome, he is another Chris a really interesting, knowledgeable and funny guy. Nigel met us at El paliacate which is a really cool, quirky music bar just hidden from the centre square. Here I tried my first and last Mazcal drink, traditional Mexican liquor poured into a tiny glass. It was so potent I couldn't even finish it. Mazcal is to be sipped in three not shot in one and drank with chilli salt and lemon. Dip the lemon in the Chilli salt suck the lemon, sip, then Chilli salt lemon again. I did it, it was lethal. Nigel was performing that night at the bar with band mate Paulo, an acoustic/ska/punky style set with a bit of harmonica chucked in too which was awesome. We played table football with the locals, drank a few beers, watched a few more bands. Really helps so much when you meet some who knows the area. Such a great night seeing some really talented musicians and we or to laugh about Chris and Nigel's tales during the process.
San Cristobal is a really great and friendly city; people were very sociable, helpful and kind. We often heard canon fires which apparently signal that an open party is happening in the closely surrounding hills. Our second night we meet Nigel in a wine tapas bar, with every drink comes free tapas!! The wines went down well. Following there we went to a small Mexican bar for some more music. Paulo who had played the previous night was there playing five instruments and singing all vocals, Blown away, it was really impressive. Why Nigel settled here is fairly obvious, a relaxed place to be and with a great music scene, really good food and such a stunning city. Really sad to leave (again!!) but so great to meet Nigel who kindly places host for a couple days. Thank you Nige!!
