Cor! Long winded bus ride and it was only just over 4 hours, god help us on our next journey- an 11 hour overnight stint to San Cristobal!! We passed through only a couple small towns within the whole journey being most of the land was dedicated to large crop fields; you see the families and workers there picking the produce to sell.
Our hostel was only a 20 minute walk from the bus station so we choose to save money and have some exercise walking our heavy bags through the city and what happens...the torrential rain kicks in! Of course! Luckily we found this pretty amusing so we embraced the free shower and waddled on..up the hill! We stop just for a minute to shelter in a door way and there was not one person or car to be seen...just us!! Ha! Nice and cooling on the positive note.
So far I have booked every hostel through Hostelbookers as it's the best way to get the best location, and this one is just as good, we found it with no issues and is minutes walk away from most things, huge local markets, all historical buff points of interest, parks, first impressions are good.
We timed things right and reached the hostel in time for the terrace bbq- in the rain but it was still awesome and still very warm. Our hostel Casa Angel was the best yet, quite a large hostel with lots of atmosphere and covered in bright colour and creative wall art. We bagged a better room than we paid for (ensuite) so we were pretty happy with that but it didn't last too long we had to move the following night.
Walking around Oaxaca city feels very safe, the people are friendly and the atmosphere is lively. We spent our first day generally getting lost and bumping our way into things; cathedral, massive markets-which seem to sell everything, historical squares and open side restaurants. The main market in Oaxaca was the most impressive, selling all kinds of local fresh produce and handmade textiles- if only I had the room to bring any of it back.
We haven't really seen anyway downfalls with Oaxaca, its well police guarded which can be intimidating, mainly being that they are swinging a machine gun around their shoulder. Everything seemed to be fairly tourist prepared.
