Everyone spent a little bit of time getting ready for opening night. We dressed ourselves up really nicely and headed back out by bus to the pavilion for a giant supper with all the other choirs. It was essentially a giant track room, completely packed with people. The line we were in for supper took forever and the food was alright. I was more excited about getting a fresh pear to eat. We saw a couple choirs that some of our group had met before. A couple South African choirs and a couple Canadian ones too. We ended up sitting way off to the side at one of the only open tables.
Once dinner was finished, we headed back outside and waited in another line to get into the arena for the opening ceremonies. Our seats were in the second level off to the side, but at least we were near the stage so we had a good view of things. They essentially treated this like an Olympic event. They had flag bearers come in from all the countries attending, and even had a special ceremony with a ringing bell to open the games.
They had performances after the opening. A strange duet between a saxophone and a DJ. They also had a few ballerinas and a traditional Latvian group dance that was pretty neat. In the end, the ceremony was far too long.
After finally getting back to the dorms, some of us went on a search for wifi. Over at a different building we found some spotty bits, and the video chat with Zach kept cutting out, so I gave up and just headed back to the dorm.
