Emily and I had decided the night before that we were going to get up early and do a walk by ourselves around Old Tallinn. So, we got up fairly early, and headed over to the Old City again. As we started walking through the streets, I started to remember things. At that point, because it was still so early, everything was closed and the streets were empty, so it was almost like walking through a dream. There was a bunches of places I recognized, and I had no problem remembering what streets to take to get to which places.
Emily and I ended up climbing up the huge set of stairs on the outside of the wall up into Toompea. Who knows how old parts of that wall are, really. At the top, we had a wonderful view of Tallinn and out to the sea. We stopped at a church that had just opened at 9 to look inside, and then took a winding path down the hill through the old part and eventually back to the hotel.
Of course, from there, we split into two groups again to do a walking tour. We started at the highest point of the old city by a Russian Orthodox Church; Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. We took a look inside, but no pictures allowed. We wandered around the upper part of Tallinn Old Town, and even went into the church that Emily and I had visited that morning. We walked back down towards the main square. Part way down, we stopped at the gate that separated the Upper Town of Tallinn from the Lower Town.
We also stopped at an art gallery type of place where they took us into the back of the shop to show us where an underground well comes up and flows just behind the walls of the shop. Then we finished our tour down in the main square. I remember the square well, we had lunch last time I was there in a restaurant right on the edge of the square, and had a group supper in the tavern place, just off the side of the square. We met up with the other half of our group and then were given free time to ourselves.
A lot of people decided they wanted to go to the shopping mall outside of the Old Town, but I wanted to stay and wader around a bit. Cosette and Johanna stayed with me and we wandered the streets. We walked past some places I remembered, like the Hall of the Blackheads where we'd had one of our concerts. We stopped in an antique shop with some interesting things. I picked up a couple souvenirs, but eventually all of our feet were hurting. It's hard walking on uneven cobblestone. So, we stopped at a little 'chocolate' cafe nested in between buildings to sit down and have a drink and a sweet to eat. We got some iced tea and shared some tiramisu cake.
After we'd rested for a bit, we looked around just a bit more, going into a couple art galleries because I wanted to see if there was anything I could pick up for a decent price (no), and then to all the market stalls along the giant old wall with some cute sweaters and hats. From there we decided we were hungry enough and were kind of running our of time, so we finally left Old Town and headed over to the shopping mall. The foodcourt on the upstairs floor was more like a canteen. I got pasta, and they made it right in front of you in a wok.
After eating, we didn't have much more time before we had to be back at the hotel, so we started to head back and we went into a liquor store to pick up a few interesting brands to take home with us. It's too bad we didn't have more time to look around the city, but we managed to pack a lot into the small amount of time we had.
