Today we have booked ourselves onto the Desert Safari. We met our 4WD driver and the 3 girls in our 'group' in the lobby of the hotel. During the drive the girls tell us they are from Essex and on a girls week away.
Our driver barely talks to us at all. When we arrive at the quad bike place he says to Tony "You want to ride quad bike - over there - your have 45 mins" and then walks off.
Catherine decides that open-faced helmets on quad bikes speeding over sand dunes doesn't look like much fun to her but is happy to take a few snaps of Tony as he rides off into the horizon. Not long after Tony comes back on the back of his quad being driven by one of the guys that works there. It turns out he had a stack and went over the handlebars and the bike landed on top of him. He has a bit of skin off his elbow, knees and thighs and has sand all over him! He is ok but will be sore tomorrow no doubt!
We then get back into the 4WD for the drive of our lives. The drive was wild. There were between 6 and 10 4WD's following each other up the dunes and each driver was trying to outdo his mates. They kept in touch by radio and were swapping laughs as we went sideways down sand dunes and had the girls screaming. Even Tony was holding on for dear life!
One of the drivers got stuck on a sand dune and when our driver went to help him out he got a flat tyre! That meant we had to all bundle out of the vehicle and go and sit in the middle of the desert while the tyre got fixed. The views were stunning though and some guys had boards and were dune boarding down the dunes. Looked fun but it was a long way to walk back up the dune once you were down the bottom!
One the tyre was repaired we all bundled back into the 4WD for another wild ride back to the road.
We were then taken out to another area which was in the middle of nowhere where we could have a camel ride and where a Arabian feast was put on. They had so much food it wasn't funny. Catherine had a ride on a camel and got a henna tattoo (which only took a whole of 2 mins while the 'artist' was on her mobile phone). Next was a belly dancing show. The belly dancer was very good but she certainly wasn't an Arab. She was actually a Russian (there are a lot of russians in Dubai).
The highlight of the day was definately the 4WDing. If you've got the stomach to handle it it's definately a must do!
