This morning we woke up and it was raining outside. I guess this is one of those 5 days a year that it rains here.
While we were at breakfast we heard that all the boat tours were cancelled for the day due to the weather.
After breakfast Ron came by and asked if we wanted to join him and Penny on a driving tour of the island. He had hired a car for 24 hours. We said yes and as it was raining we decided to try and find as many of the islands wineries as possible.
Apparently you can't get lost on this island but we kinda did. We found our way down to one of the black beaches at Kamari, we also found the airbase and the very friendly gate guards told us where we had taken our wrong turn so that we could find the winery.
It took us a while to find the first winery but we stopped several times to take pictures of some beautiful scenery. The first winery we stopped at we weren't sure if it was open or not as the road in front of it was washed out. The guys went to check the situation out while the girls stayed in the nice dry car. Success! The winery was open for free taste-testing - hoorah! This winery has been in the family for 4 generations and has been operating since 1903. The grapes are all grown on the island and the wine was beautiful. We all left carrying various bottles of wine to enjoy later.
We then thought we should try and find something to eat and we had heard about a restaurant on the island that was supposed to sell the best fish and chips. We finally found it but it was closed.
On the way back from there we found another winery so we went and did some more testing. This winery charged 2.50 for the testing and when we got there there were 4 Aussies from Melbourne already there. The wines weren't quite as nice as the first ones we tried so we didn't buy any. While we were there another car of 2 Aussies from Perth and 2 Canadians turned up. So far we seem to only run into Aussies, Kiwis, Yanks and Canadians.
Now we really needed to find some lunch. Ron and Penny took us to a local place that they were recommended to by their hotelier. We were the only tourists in there. The place was full of locals. The food was awesome - big servings for not much money.
After lunch we decided to try and go to Oia to watch their famous sunsets. We went around the east side of the island and found a quaint little port which we decided to stop and take photos of. We eventually found ourselves at the bottom of the Oia cliffs. There were a couple of restaurants at the bottom and we had a little explore down there and then decided it was time for some more wine by the sea. The waves were coming up quite high so every now and then we had to lift our feet up so as not to get wet. It was great fun.
Then it was back in the car to go back up the other end of the island for another explore. We found yet another winery and this one had a view of the sunset so we stayed there and watch the sun set whilst doing some more wine tasting.
This place is truly beautiful. Despite the weather we had a fantastic day and will be falling into bed happy little campers tonight.
