Toms Intrepid Travels
Hello everybody...this is Saigon! It is much the same as Hanoi, just a little bit moe westernized, with more skyscraper hotels and posh cafe's. And yes....just as many bloody motorbikes. While we were here, the whole city is preparing for re-unification day. Its been 30 years exactly since the end of the Vietnam war! So as you can expect it was a little bit more crazy as usual, especially when they decided to block off half the streets!
We also spent a two days and a night in the mEkong Delta, the most southern province in Vietnam, and one that is surrounded in water...it is a delta after all! Therefore it was a great experince going everywhere by boat...much like Venice...just with jungle, and shacks on stilts! WE got to wander round some of the intricate villages and see how these people live and work. They make everything here, from metal stuff and pottery to coconut andy and rice crispy cakes! And it is all done by hand, yet most of the time you'd think they were quicker than a machine! This being a delta though, meant there wre a lot of pesky mosquitos about, and there were a few bites. Poor Richard though, his bed was underneath the light, and he left his mossie net untucked, and found every bug in the delta had descende on his bed!
Back in Saigon we went to the CuCHi Tunnels, which are extensive network of underground passages used by the Vietcong in the war. We got the chance to crawl through these 2ft by 2ft tunnels, which was a little chlostrophobic. However to relive this tension i got to fire 5 rounds on areal sawn-off shotgun! I really did feel like Arnie after that!
This was also the last leg of the Vietnam trip so we had tosay goodbye to quite a few members of the group, which was sad after getting on so well for 3 weeks. They went in style though, with the last night being spent in the Saigon, Saigon Bar on the 10th floor of the Caravelle Hotel, sipping cocktails til morning! Next stop Cambodia.
