Toms Intrepid Travels
As soon as you crossed the border, you knew you were in a different country. To my surprise there was quite a distinct difference between Vietnam and Cambodia. Here was a lot poorer, which is pretty hard since Vietnam is poor! The people are a lot darker skinned, and don't look quite so eastern. The land is completely flat and baron aswell - you can see miles to the horizon, unlike the mountainous and lush terrain of Vietnam.
Unfortunately, land mines are still a big problem in Cambodia, and as soon as we reached Phnom Penh, there were a lot of beggars with limbs missing, and also a lot of street kids. This was the closest i'd come to abject poverty in my life, and it was quite an eye opener.
We had a full day's guided tour of Phnom Penh, which took all it had to offer. It was a day of great contrast. In the morning, we went to the National museum, and Royal Palace, two buildings of great architecture. The palace in particular was very impressive, as you can see from the piccie. In the afternoon however, we visted the genocide museum and the killiong fields, all linked to the horrific regime of the Khmer rouge in 1975-79. This was an eye openiong afternoon, and there weren't many dry eyes in the group afterwards. Its hard to imagine how 2 million people were executed for absolutely nothing. Needless to say, a quiet night in was spent that night.
