Toms Intrepid Travels
After finally departing Hanoi for the last time, we had a 12 hour overnight train journey to Hue, the Imperial city, and old capital of Vietnam in the days of the Nguyen Dynasty Emperors. The sun was also finally shining properly, and boy was it strong! We checked out some great little temples and the old citadel, and took a boat trip up the perfume river to see some grand tombs, but in the evenings the group was really starting to come together! We went to a great little restaurant where the owner was deaf and mute, but made us all these bottle openers, and told us to take pictures of famous places with them in, then send back to him for his board! So i have a mission.
In Hoi An, about four hours further down the coast, it was the shoppers paradise! 100's of tailors lined every street, and you could have any garment made to measure in less than a day. You say it, they make it. I also hired one of the dreaded scooters out for a day with a friend, and that was an experience. I'll leave it at that. My pet hate about Vietnam though, is all the pesky little ladies on the beaches that won't leave you alone! Back massages, foot pedicures, bracelets, pineapples, mangos! You name it, then will try and sell it. And they just don't go away when you say no!
THe nights were a little more interestin, with kareoke being the them of the night! We all drunkenly bashed out some classics, and duely crucified them, before moving on to bigger clubs! Here we all got ushered outside in the dark, as all the lights went out.....apparently the police were coming! We got out of there quick though, and rode back into town on the back of the scooters. Thats where all the great photos are from! The rest of the night was spent in the hotel pool until 4am. Needless to say, i didn't make it up for breakfast the next day!
