A stunning start to the day meant we should take the opportunity to get up Gokio Ri before the clouds came in. This usually happened around 11am so early starts in these mountains are essential. The lake looked amazing this morning. It was a very cold, clear and frosty morning as we headed out our guesthouse, across the small river which fed the lake and onto Gokio Ri itself. There were two routes, one that looked very steep that pointed directly up, and another, more undulating path which we assumed winded slowly up the hill. Gokio Ri would give us spectacular views of Everest and her surrounding peaks. After a while of walking and not really climbing very high we soon realised that we were on the route to another, smaller pass, not the summit. The mist had come in now so we elected to go back for breakfast and attempt the correct path later in the day. A sensational breakfast of potato naan and another tea and we were all set for Ri. There were breaks in the clouds and we could see the group of Portuguese Trekkers we had met a few days before, coming back down. We decided to make an attempt for it. It was a very steep climb up, and still as way over 5000m, this was going to be tough. The track went on forever so that meant plenty stops to take in the incredible views of the peaks, the lake and the village below. After a 3 hour climb, we eventfully reached the prayer flags and the windy summit of Gokio Ri. Small gaps in the cloud allowed is tiny glimpses of Everest however, the views of the other peaks were amazing. We stayed up at the top for a while, taking it all in before a relatively quick decent back down to the village and another naan, this time a cheese one. The evening was spent eating and wandering between the bakery (nothing bought but lots of window shopping) and the lodges of Gokio, looking for the ultimate fire/food combo!
