I can't tell you enough how easy it is to drive here and how scenic the routes are. We've been extremely lucky with the weather I think too. So off we set after filling up with petrol and sorting out our route- only one road we could take really! A good way to go so kept to the 100kph (ish) limit most of the way and stopped briefly at the Riverside Cottages- some nice little shops with nic nacs and a restaurant- so we had a nose around and stretches our legs bef...

Another beautifully sunny morning at our waterside lodge. Again, Kerry was more than happy to drop us off at the car hire place- great hospitality. Off we went- easy car to drive- automatic 1.5 Nissan with plenty of room for us and our luggage. We woke early and were greeted with a beautiful sunrise and peaceful views from our room. The Waikawa harbour just along from Picton was where we stayed in the motel Bay Vista- managed by really nice people, Kerry and John. Long drive to Wellington with many roadworks and slow lorries through the gorges. Missed our check in for the 2.45 crossing by a mere 20 minutes but offered the freight crossing at 9pm which at least got us across to our accommodation. Contacted Kerry & John at Bay Vista motel who were so helpful and offered to pick us up at Picton when we arrived at around midnight- the alternative was to catch a ferry at 9am Tues which we were not keen on- so very grateful ...
