Copacabana, Bolivia, not quite as fashionable as Rio's version, but a cute enough little town
on the edge of Lake Titicaca never the less.
Once we checked into our room, on the top floor, which just scraped a view of the lake over
the other tall hotels on the lakes edge, we went to watch the daily occurance of the
blessing of the cars. It does pretty much what it says on the tin. Local shamen priests were
popping bonnets of cars, trucks and taxis of all-comers and they waved special plants about
and prayed for each door and boot. Then the car is decorated like the most gaudy christmas
tree you ever saw and beer is sprayed all over it, formula one winner stylee. Then fire
crackers are thrown and confetti goes everywhere. Its really fun to watch, but taken
pretty seriously with vehicles backing up out of town....and you can also buy model cars,
trucks and houses too for a quick blessing if it can't be there in person!
Down at the lakes edge is a bit like being at Southend on sea with worn out pedalos,
children's fairground rides and large inflatable slides....not really what we expected.
Still it was the setting for a beautiful bright orange sunset that evening and then we picked
the nicest restaurant we could find to try the local speciality of Titicaca trout. Well
tasty.
From here, is the option of going to Isla del Sol, the birthplace of the Inca God
of the sun, but after having perused our friends pics after they'd been, we decided to skip
it. It looked kind of bare, and the sacred stone table used for sacrificial offerings in
the past had been turned into a makeshift tat shop by some old crone.
The next day we made our way around the edge of the lake and across into deepest darkest
Peru.....
