So the last 3 day have been pretty hectic. Woke up saturday and went straight to the nearest hospital as Mark had been up all night on the toilet! We went armed with our lonely planet and a detailed description of symptoms, what could go wrong? Well at first nothing, we managed to get signed in and sent straight to a doctor within 10 minutes she read the extensive list that Mark gave her and then she started asking questions....pardon?!!!?? Realising that we had now reached our communication barrier the doctor lead us around a corner and Mark was given an IV drip and we were sent on our way. Hope was once again restored (apart from Mark now worrying about catching hep B from the drip) heading back to the hostel we had received numerous suggestions on how to deal with the shishing from the families, on there advise we stoped taking imodium and bought lots of dry food stuff!!!! Pizza for dinner again? Yum!.......The hope was short lived after another long night on the toilet Mark decides that we should try the private hospital mentioned in lonely planet in the hope of an English speaking doctor....we were off again. Once finally arriving at Unimed and the taxi trying to rip us off we met a very nice lady who could speak English and translate everything for us, the doc said Mark needed a blood test and then possibly antibiotics however registration alone cost R250. Thank God for travel insurance...after a long wait while the hospital decided we would have to pay first and then claim on our insurance the very nice English speaking lady offered to take us to a free public hospital once her son came out of x-ray. :)
Hospital numbero 3.... Third time lucky the lady wrote down a letter for Mark to give the doctor and he had a translator on the computer, whoop! After a blood test and a very reluctant stool sample we now know that drinking water on the boats gives you a bacterial infection....a course of antibiotics and another pizza for dinner. We are ready to blow this joint! We have decided that we are now sick of the Amazon and we will do a trek from another country when Mark is better...Venezuela anyone?
