We spent the morning driving through the beautiful hilly green & fertile countryside of Rwanda. We are sad to have only spent 1 night in this country. It is one of the more expensive places we have been - with a cafe latte costing approximately what it would have in London. However the people appear to be very friendly with big smiley waves to us and everyone seemed to be working, with less gender differentiation. Both men & women were working in the fields as we drove past.
As we drove across the river diving Rwanda & Tanzania we reached the Tanzanian passport control. Due to the need for every one of us to receive a handwritten receipt to prove we had paid for our visa we had lunch there - right next to a huge construction site. As per usual we were the star attraction.
Upon entering Tanzania there was an immediate significant change to the landscape - hills were more gentle, but drier, dustier & scrubbier. Apparently through May & early June they had some of the heaviest rainfall in years, however within weeks it is already drying out.
We arrived at our campsite with basic facilities (electricity was generator powered). We were sharing rooms with double beds and blue lights. A few jokes were made. We were taken on an escorted walk of the village - our escorts for aged between 4 years & 10 years - varying degrees of poverty evident in clothing and cleanliness. They were very proud to show us their school and some older lads playing soccer in the late afternoon sun. It was market day so plenty of people about and many comments made about the foreigners in their midst.
Vikki disappeared to bed early whilst Tessa attempted to lead a rebellious crew off site for an evening drink. However, they didn't get far before Kanyo caught up with them and talked them out of it on the basis of security concerns related to the closeness of the Burundi border.
