Five hour bus journey to Kanchanaburi today and already the truck driver has brought us to the central festival shopping mall and not the central pattaya road, trying to get another 50B off of us! 'No mate, we aren't dull!' And then he asked if we wanted to go to a hotel. Thai people are getting on my last nerves lately!!
Eventually at the bus station, the bus was a double decker. The seats were massive and they had reclining foot rests and gadgets for massage chairs but they didn't work obviously.
We were so comfy, 5 hours was a breeze! Helped that we slipped a travel sleeping pill before it though! Haha.
Arrived in Kanchanaburi about 3pm, an American guy who was on our bus tagged along with us (he was about 60) been travelling for 35 years and spoke the thai lingo so that was very interesting to watch - a white man speaking Thai, even the locals where gobsmacked haha!!
Our lodge was only a mile or so away so we all caught a lift together, Scott was so interested in him, getting all the goss and info off of him, which I must admit was pretty handy!
He waited for us to go get something to eat, I fancied the place 30 second walk down the road and he had to go find somewhere to stay so we parted ties then.
Our hotel is floating on the water, our room doesn't have a river view but if you look through the hole in the wall you can see the river. The room is absolutely box tiny but has a massive flat screen tv on the wall and air con. The bed is one of the comfiest I've slept on in a while! It's up there with airport hotels and of course the Rembrandt in Bangkok! I am definitely looking forward to a good night sleep in that!!
After a bite to eat we walked round the block to the Thailand and Burma war museum and the railway PoW cemetery.
The museum was really interesting, to see how poorly the PoWs were treated by the Japanese and the working conditions they were forced to work and live in were awful, you wouldn't let a pig live in it. The ulcers and diseases they caught from working through monsoon season, living in bamboo huts and sleeping on bamboo was awful too.
All because the Japanese wanted to take control of the whole of Asia. Horrible little men!
It's all coming together in my mind now, I didn't realise that the Japanese took over near enough the whole of Asia at the same time we were having a civil war in India and at the same time hurler was trying to take over Europe and at the same time of the bombings at pearl harbour, okay give or take a year or two in between but everything happened around the same time and era, whereas I didn't think that it all occurred at the same time! It really was a world war. Ha - such a dumb ass.
We went to the same place for food this evening, and watched the sunset on the rooftop. It looked like we were in Africa with the trees and deer and a red sunset. Very picturesque... N'aaww! We had a super early night, starting to feel old going to bed at 9pm in the evenings haha!
