Even though we had they alarm on for 8am, I could not wake up for the life of me! That's a first since I've been here, and we have had loads of sleep in the last couple of days with all our lie ins! Ross woke me back up at about 8.30, we had to go downstairs and get some breakfast in the lobby as it was included in this hotel. I had some bran flakes and orange juice, Ross made a waffles in the shape of the Texas state with maple syrup on, and had cereal and a chocolate muffin and brought some cereal bars up aswell, you know - just incase that wasn't enough! We are out on the communal balcony, it was nice and cool(ish) as we were in the shade, he started feeding the pigeons but they must have been used to it because they weren't shy at all. We showed and went out, the taxi driver in Dallas warned us of the heat in San Antonio, that it was hotter than Dallas! I didn't think it was possible, but he sure was right! We could barely pick our feet up off the floor it was that hot at 9.30am! First we went to the Alamo, it's the oldest building in San Antonio; there's a lot of history dating back to the early 1800's,
In the 1800s, Mexico bought the state of Texas and told everyone that if they wanted to live their at 12 cent an acre they could do so tax free until 1836, so loads of people all over the world went there and done so. Although when 1835-6 arrived the Mexican wanted those on the land to start paying taxes, they didn't want to and therefore no longer wanted to be apart of Mexico so in 1836 Texas became under attack from the Mexican army as the texans wanted to leave Mexico State and become their own state and be apart of America once again; they won obviously but that's why Texas has such a big influence of Mexican culture. We then went for a riverboat ride which was lovely and cool with the breeze! There is so much history in San Antonio it's hard to keep up! They have flood barriers all around the city now to prevent the water levels dropping and rising.
We done a little souvenir shopping and then went to the tower of the Americans which is the second tallest tower in america (we done the first tallest in Las Vegas) that was another pretty cool site, you could see so far into the distance!
We went and had a drink and some nibbles, couldn't wait to sit down, our feet were soar and we were aching and tired from the heat not so much the amount of walking we had done! We went back to the hotel for an hour, I sky per Scott and then we fell asleep. There wasn't much shopping to do because it was a Sunday and everything closes early, especially on bank holiday. We went back out at around 7pm, we seen some people running down the side of the water and looking over a wall, so we joined in! It was a snake in the water, couldn't have been a rattle snake, I called it a spotted water snake, my knowledge for animals is exceedingly good you see! Ross wasn't having any of it. Haha!
Anyways, went for a walk into the old town of San Antonio where they were having a labour day party, it was $20 to get in though and you had to pay for drinks and what not on top so that was a little much! They were having a performance on the theatre they have there, the stage is on the one side of the river with the spectators on the other side, they filmed miss congeniality there. :)
There were hundreds of people about, I couldn't believe how busy it was still! We stopped in a Texas steakhouse (they're all called that) we both had salad, me chicken and Ross shrimp. I had a margarita, as it seems to be very popular here in San Antonio, Mexican and Spanish background?
*forgot to mention - we were going to go horse riding in San Antonio but whilst I was on the bus last night I google mapped how to get to the ranch and it was 36 miles out with no public buses so we had to knock it on the head because it would have been too expensive for us to get a taxi there, so I found another ranch in Houston which we are getting the bus to, will be better for us (less expensive anyways)
Back to the hotel for around 10pm, back to being old fogeys but we had an early rise and the only other thing left to do on the river walk was either fall in or drink more alcohol! :)
The time is flying by!
5 cities down, 4 to go!
