Slept better last night in that double bed to myself, it must have been that pillow I was hugging. Only some lady shouting at the top of her lungs through a megaphone this morning made sure I didn’t sleep passed 7am.. what the hell she was ranting on about I don’t know but there are only two type of trucks that slowly creep down the side of main roads and that’s a Buddhist truck or the lottery ticket truck so either one I’m not too impressed about being woken up to.
We strolled our to breakfast on the cute little terrace at 8.30am, we had bloody kids as per usual. Sri Lankan pancakes, egg hoppers, fruit, toast, the bloody works!
We were going to slowly make our way to the bus stop and jump on the first of three towards Mirissa but the guy who owned the guesthouse worked in the town that we needed to go to first so he took us in the car there. He also gave us a Sri Lankan gem, a red garnet. Just because we were staying there! Splitting that and making it into a ring when we get back. Wasn’t aware that Princess Diana’s blue sapphire engagement ring was made in Sri Lanka, the stone and the band was found in mines in the Ella area, one of the most rarest and expensive in the world.
He dropped us right outside the bus that we needed, lovely seats straight on the front row! We were only two or so hours and onto the next place.
The bus got crowded as they do! We were not moving from the front seats today, we were ‘clergy’ today. (The signs above the front row of seats we can only think they mean reserved for women because any aged women sat in them). No matter how many looks we received you just don’t make eye contact with them and you stay seated.
We switched buses in Matara to go to Mirissa, first on the bus again I was dying for a bloody wee even though I hate paying 20 rupees to pee into a hole in the ground and have to swill it down with a dirty bucket of water there was no way I was going to hold this one in. It was quite a nice bus journey across the sea wall, it was trying to rain on and off but we managed to not get caught in it. Walked up the road from the bus stop trying to find the gap between the buildings to get to the little guesthouse we were stopping at for the next few nights, weren’t expecting anything too fancy for £2.50 a night each. It did go by it’s name though ‘the hidden beach house’ very hidden!
We were practically in the sea we were that close and we had hammocks in the garden which was cute. We waited for the lady to come open up for us she didn’t speak much English. The place was definitely only worth £2.50, it wasn’t at all special considering what we had the last night for just 50p more each per night.
We did a HIIT workout in the garden, went to get some beer and rum from the wine store down the road and sat on the terrace for the rest of the afternoon turtle spotting, spotting we did do - lots of them at that floating about the place! :)
Went for some dinner in the evening just around the corner, it was recommended on trip advisor with the budget ‘$’ one dollar sign. Our kinda budget.
Although... the one dollar sign in mirissa is different to the rest of the places we had been. It was more of a two $$ budget restaurant. The food was yummy, we had vegetable kottu and devilled prawns which was super yummy!
But.... I broke my bloody haviannas flip flop just by curling my toes up. The glue came unstick from the shoe and the strap came off. Ellie found this extremely hilarious the fact that this was my only pair of flip flops, they’re real haviannas and I haven’t worn them for almost a week yet they’re still broken.
Guess who’s walking home with one dirty foot tonight....
Bloody great walk home trying not to stand on any rubbish and still not get run over by oncoming flying buses and tuk tuks.
The guy that owned the rotti/restaurant/spa shop in front of our guesthouse seen that my flip flops were broke and wasn’t so positive that my idea of super gluing them back together would work, I will fix them I cannot have another RIP haviannas this year, the last pair lost its flop (right foot) in zero gravity on the beach. I tried with numerous volunteers trying to find it, i emailed lost and found at Zero gravity and I even put an Instagram search out for it. It’s still missing In Action god bless it.
So the little guesthouse has a lovely warm shower, a good fan and strong WiFi connection; and that’s about it. The bed is like sleeping in concrete I had to keep turning because my hip was going numb after lying on it for too long, it was so so uncomfortable and to top it off those delightful dogs next door had a good old ‘let’s see who can bark the loudest and longest’ competition at 4am in the morning. I wanted to strangle them for the full hour or more they were going for.
I was awake at 6am, Ellie slept a little longer but she was definitely not sleeping well either.
Couldn’t wait to get to the beach to lie down on something comfy.
My back in absolute agony. :( first time since the injections god damn it.
We parked up first ones on the beach at 8.30am watching he turtles pop up around us. Nice to just sit and not do anything in the sun, I didn’t feel it was too hot compared to what I’m used to anyways. Ellie was sweating her t*** off in and out of the sea to cool down. We were done sunbathing around lunchtime so grabbed some delightfully dirty egg rotti’s and a paratha for lunch and a chill on the terrace.
Realised once we got in that we have definetly burnt today, like a bloody tomato my face was and a small patch on my chest. Not quite sure why just on those two random parts I put cream on evenly so I thought.
Miss Emily Bethan Lewis however thought she would treat her extremely white skin to a bright shade of pink on her thighs, back, chest and face. Oh and feet and arms. I thought she was putting a thirty on but it was indeed only a 15 spf. Not ideal when the white bits haven’t seen the sun since November 2018...
Not ideal as now shes struggling to touch the pink bits and is resembling a squashy sweet which is extremely funny but not at the same time.
The guy in the restaurant come spa (probably a brothel) gave me some new flip flops he bought down the market, my exact size aswell! What a sweetie! I still wasn’t buying a massage there and I’m still very confident I am going fix those havianna’s better than they’ve ever been!
We walked across the beach and up to coconut hill for sunset, a slow stroll as the hill seemed a little tricky in flip flops. We took a rum and coke but the sunset disappeared behind the clouds so not much of a sunset but it was nice to see anyhow.
Went to the fresh wave for dinner this evening it had good reviews on tripadvisor and even though it was a $ budget we knew what to expect with the prices and that it was probably going to be a little more. We picked fresh fish to be grilled for dinner, we had a ‘mimi’ fish which was cooked so good and was absolutely gorgeous, it came off the bone so easy with no little boney surprises once it was in your mouth. We had a kottu to go alongside it aswell and a pina colada.
The bloody marching band came in for a Sri Lankan party just as we were about to eat. So loud that we could hear ourselves speak over the trumpets and drums it was piercing. Apart from the band it was a nice evening.
Another s*** sleep on that rock hard bed absolutely killed my back. Ellie struggles to seep because she was so burnt she couldn’t lie on any part of her body for too long.
The one side of my face was extremely puffy and swollen this morning, I think maybe it was partly because of gym sun burn but the half from hardly no sleep.
The only part of my face that was sore was under my nostril. I can’t believe I bloody burnt!
Ellie was pretty much almost crying bless her with the sunburn, she couldn’t walk for her legs hurting. I think her entire body was stinging her.
Lucky for us it was pissing it down with rain all day today so we hibernated in that delightful room all day and binged on Netflix. We did manage to shower and go to the shop for some water and a bite to eat but that was about as far as we moved all day until dinner time.
Very slowly we made our way to a cheap cheap place for dinner, ‘Dana’s curry pot’ all you could eat for 450 rupees finally! Some decently Sri Lankan priced food.
And it was delicious! A few veggie curries and mini rotti’s to soak it all up - yummmm-ieee!
I got bitten on my bottom a few times, that mosquito got lucky, he got me right on my bum cheeks. So itchy!
Couldn’t wait for our third night on the concrete bed with squashy tonight, she looked so sad in so much pain bless her!
We had ear plugs for tonight’s cocktail of noises.
