Right on cue the dogs had their early morning barking competition at 4am for a good hour or so.
My back is in bloody bits this morning from the damn bed. Can’t wait to get up and get out, we left around 10 when she came to attempt to clean and get the key from us so we walked down to the bus station with Ellie very much in pain with her shoulders, chest, back and legs bless her. The bus was only an hour and half to Galle and yessssss! We were clergy again today (head down and do not make eye contact). The scheming bus conductor cond us out of paying for extra seat because we had luggage in the hold all. (In the same place we have had our bags every bus journey and not been bathed before...) he’s pocketing that, but I couldn’t be arsed to argue over 25p.
The hotel was thankfully much nicer! It was a OYO hotel they seem to be a franchise or chain of hotels owned by different people but must have set standards. It was a lovely guesthouse on top of the owners house and over looked onto Galle and the sea.
We soon got a much needed shower and walked down to the fort, Ellie hungry for some egg samosas and veggie rolls which we grabbed on the way. The fort was lovely, all Dutch architecture within the buildings, cobbled streets everywhere with quaint little quirky art and fashion shops or tea and Sri Lankan wooden souvenirs, Ellie’s been dieing to buy a coconut dish with shells glasses on the inside of them; they’re lovely but I’ve managed to convince her not to throw out a bunch of clothes this early on to buy a coconut dish...
We had an ice cream which she got all down me - by sitting next to me with the wind blowing straight in my direction and her not being able to scoop up the melting cream running down the stick and her fingers in time. Then the rain came in and pretty much stayed all afternoon whilst we had a beer and played a few games of cards in one bar and had dinner in another. We couldn’t be bothered to wait for it all to clear up so we grabbed a mini chocolate muffin and a bottle of coke on the way home to have a super wild Friday night in drinking rum, watching Netflix in bed and removing the hair from our armpits the Sri Lankan herbal remedy way, we are two very exciting ladies. (This is all before 6.30pm).
Finally slept a little better last night, the bed was way comfier than the concrete bed in Mirissa, breakfast on the terrace in our PJs we weren’t rushing anywhere today! Lots of toast, banana, papaya and most importantly tea!
Before we got ready for a walk through the fort again, we got ready and up later around midday I think so that secretly Ellie could justify getting herself an egg samosa and veg roll from the same street vendor on the way out and call it lunch...
haha! Only kidding. But we did have to get an egg samosa and tried some other veg bun thing between us for lunch, we sat on the fort wall and watched the world go by, or should I say love birds. Saturday seems to be the date day for young lovers hiding under umbrellas and strolling through the fort or sat on the edge of the walls pretending to like each other or try to keep their hands off each other more so. They do like to wear matching couples shirts here we have noticed. Same colour, same style, it’s a little strange - but each to their own!
We did have a giggle at some of the bloody photo shoots going on around the fort and on the little beaches, just random couples having their photos taken whilst gazing into each other’s eyes walking down the road or up against a tree, my favourite matching jean shorts and matching white T-shirt’s running through the water together whilst smiling and staring at one another - that takes talent haha!!
We stalled ourselves from going in the Dutch hospital where they have made lots of cute little bars and restaurants, plan to watch the New Zealand v South Africa World Cup Match and go to a place for cheaper food, plans don’t always go to plan though do they...
we sat down, two men from Bangor north wales so we all got talking after the game, they were working for a security company that helped out with security on ships going through certain seas and their base was in Galle. Told me about his other job for Club Med in Japan doing the ski season, looked pretty interesting to be honest.
Anyways we were all chatting and having beers and then a big group came in from an organised tour and the Sri Lankan Bruno Mars was playing and one thing led to a tequila and more beer, dancing and laughing a lot with everyone; oh! And free nibbles from the left over food in the kitchen which seen me and Ellie stumbling home passed sunset around 11pm (much to Ellie’s dismay in the dark) didn’t feel unsafe though as we were marching very quick and seemed very unapproachable doing so with one arm linked with each other and the other arm marching up and down we flew home in around 10 minutes.
Two tablets were on the cards before bed - I wasn’t waking up with a stinking headache and having to travel all day tomorrow.
A bloody good night in that starbean restaurant for our last one in Sri Lanka!
It has indeed been a pleasurable 17 days!!
