Super early risers, it’s a good job we have moved away from 8 and 16 bed dorms now, we would the hated ones in the rooms. We wake early, it takes me a considerable amount of time more than Ellie to wake up and get ready, that’s why she puts her alarm on earlier than necessary.
These beds are short and narrow, not great for me as I toss and turn a lot in the night so every time that happens Beth wakes up to not fall off them. They were cool pallet beds though. Quirky and all that.
Day 2 of Petra and after breakfast we were going to walk to the treasury to bed the tour buses and crowds of people to a very empty UNESCO site, very surprised at how late people rise even when staying here and going to the site with the heat and the crowds. We weren’t going as far today, not sure our poor bloody calf’s could take it.
Walking down the trail path to the treasury a very gay Jordinian guide in his golf buggy with his golden oldies tour thought he was clever and of course judged us at wearing dresses and burks into the place thinking we were missing things and not getting all the information in until we told him we already did it with a tour.
The Jack Sparrows of Petra were swarming around the treasury wanting to take photos for us at a price and ripping the sign off that says “this is a UNESCO site, at no time should you pay for you to have your photo taken or climb a trail”.
So we wanted the “the famous treasury” photo so that meant we had to climb this rock, oh this little jack sparrow did not want to let me up, he wanted to take me or me pay him. At which I told go and get the police I will tell them what you doing, I kept moving and he put his arm out in front of me so I climbed around it to which he said “don’t touch me”. I then laughed and proceeded to say “don’t worry I wouldn’t go near you with that smell your carrying around”. Bit below the belt but he was pissing me off. Move out my way your crook and con artist.
All fine, we had some photos a laugh at climbing in dresses and met an Aussie woman at the top who was nice she was travelling with G-Adventures.
We for sure missed the crowds, on our way back through the trail we bumped into loads of tourists. On our way up we stopped at the shop Ellie wanted a magnet and I fancied the T-shirt, Bedouin man was quite nice fairly good English quite young was helping us, until he started asking the questions you single how old are you and winking. Let’s go Ellie, you’ll get a magnet up the top of the hill! I’ll be back tomorrow we are here until Wednesday! To which he asked where we were staying and I said Movenpick, it was in fact Nomads but I’m not that stupid to let him know where we live here.
Headed to Petra museum next to the visitor centre we were the only ones in their, lovely and quiet with the history parts that had been preserved. Still never can get over the intricate work they did thousands of years ago with a stone and piece of wood.
Whilst we got in the car that was strategically parked at the bottom of devils hill and in the shade an hour or more had passed since coming out of Petra site and going around the museum, we walked back to the car minding our own business, I got in first and unlocked the door for Ellie’s side (because you know our Lamborghini is not a smart car, it’s old school…)
I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a guy in tracksuit bottoms and a red long sleeve zip up. s***. Get in the car Ellie lock the doors, and I pulled off fast. It was the Bedouin guy, he’d left his shop gone up to the top of the hill and must have waited for us. Ellie fairly oblivious but then wondered why I sped off so fast and locked the doors. So not only did we bring the car to save our calf’s but it was our get away, wouldn’t have had an easy escape if we hadn’t brought it, we would have pestered us all the way up and probably got a little more creepy and pushy.
Okay we were at the top, safe in the Nomads hostel, changed and packed we loaded the car and we were off on our jolly to the next destination. Wadi Rum!
The drive was pleasant and on the top of the mountains down over into the next valley. Only around hour and half which was kind of nice not to be in the car too long it means it wouldn’t make me so tired.
The mountains looked different this time entering Wadi Rum, not dripping like candle wax. More layered like a baklava cake.
Arriving off road through the sand to our Martian tents, Hassan zawaideh camp. It looked lovely! The Martian tents I only realised were a popular thing because of the film Martian being filmed here.
Big boss signed us in, he had that don’t f**k with me look, natural lip filler his lips were HUGE! And his dish dab was on, he was kind and nice to us. He included dinner in the price as a hospitality and welcome, we have definetly come to Jordan at the right time. Their hospitality is great and they are very welcoming and grateful that you are there!
We got there earlier than we expected so we had around two hours to relax in the tent and have some lunch they provided via buffet before going out on our jeep tour. (Not the keep your on the poster photos) haha! Natural air con! We were on the back of a pick up Toyota truck with sears and a shade welded to the back. It was pretty cool, I mean Ellie looked skeptical haha! We were bouncing around like fools in the back. At one point our driver was stood up hanging out the truck whilst driving the dunes I couldn’t work out how he was doing it as his legs surely couldn’t be long enough to keep the accelerator on?
Funny! He seemed like the odd on out of the group, we had bully goat gruff / slim version of a chunk from the goonies haha.
We had a few stops throughout the reserve. Martian rock first, great view point! Then a few more Nabatean carvings, king Lawrence hide away (first king of Jordan), then the arch bridge basically a piece of rock stuck between two or balancing between them should I say. Some lovey chia tea in the Bedouin tents along the way. The reserve was so empty and quiet, definitely been lucky with travel and the amount of tourists about the place or the lack of them should we say! It was pleasant enough to sit in the back of the truck and take in the breathtaking views to be honest! And a keep to ourselves. Then we watched sunset and headed back to the tent for shower and dinner which was cooked partially in the ground, always cool how they do that with the natural oven!
Music was blaringgggg, we went back to the tent sat on our decking, had a beer that we bought from Nomads and did some star spotting, we didn’t fancy paying and going out to the star gazing place. Or being taken just the two of us ten minutes outside the camp for a walk in the desert haha. The stars were good enough for us loads of shooting stars! What a lovely end to a great day!
