You guessed it… early morning wake up call! And after such a late night last night, such dare devils!
Didn't have the best night sleep, the bed is comfy but thin and not very long so feel like a giant in it.
Breakfast buffet was nice such a lovely setting overlooking the wadi musa mountains!
We headed down to the visitor centre and got a guide, his name Mohammad, 67. Great English very lovely man! He was going to be walking and talking us through the main trail and giving us tips and pointers on how and where to go afterwards. He had a BA in English literature and had been to Cardiff before to stay with a friend haha. He said pre covid the site would see 5000 visitors a day but now post covid only 2000 max and with it being summer even less. I guess we came at a good time for crowds but not so good for it being cheap.
We beat the crowds though even at 8am the place was quiet walking in, the tour buses hadn't arrived.
The place was discovered and built by the Nabatean people 350 BC. Holy crap! That's old!
They came through from Saudi and Israel and set up shop. It was a bustling neighbourhood with thousands of people there, they had three main tribes / provinces in Jordan at that time with one of them being Wadi Rum.
When the archeological scientists discovered Petra first back in the late 1800s the place was full of sand and obviously neglected. They found bodies in a house of a man and woman believed to be 215years old when they died!!
The natives there trade a lot with camels, sand stone and pottery to different countries from Italy to China and India.
95 year old king was the last one of the Nabateans, he didn't find love until this time and she was then 25 years old, then he fell so in love that he neglected the people and that's when they believe the Romans invaded. They found all the stories on scrolls carved into the sandstones in the caves.
We walked bloody miles today on that tour and then up to the Monastery, which wasn't flat obviously! Then we went up to sacrifice point - when I say we were almost crying we aren't lying. It was hot our legs and feet were tired and we wanted to just stop and someone pick us up and drop us off at the hotel. The steps are sandstone and uneven aswell which makes it harder! The view was well worth it and we stopped for a fresh orange juice before heading down and out of the site. Exhausted we went back up the hill to the hostel and counted 30,000 steps on the clock for the day.
Loads of jack sparrow look alikes very confused by why they make themselves look like that, even though it wasn't filmed there. Maybe it's easier than trying to make them selves look like Harrison ford from Indiana Jones?
We were supposed to be going to do some cooking at Petra kitchen tonight but it was the very last thing I wanted to do was stand and cook after today so we knocked it on the head and did a bar crawl around town to all 3 bars that have booze. Haha! Petra beer and another one beginning with C went down treats! We found out why they dress like Jack Sparrow - of course it's a scam but if you type it into google you see why! We found a good article on off the beat travelling blog/website.
God damn generators kept going off all night so the power would go off, it was boiling! I can imagine myself just passing the eff Jeff out tonight! Shattered!!
