Time to leave for Eger! This time by bus and it so happened that the bus station was right behind our apartment so only a 4 minute walk which was very handy! We were supposed to have rain today in Eger, hoping it’s not a lot!
The bus journey was cheap and pleasant, lovely warm on the coach and front row seats. The rain started to come in as we got closer to Eger and it was fine rubbish rain so it was just annoying in your face. Again we walked through the town to the hotel. The town centre had cobble stones right through it so we made an absolute racket going through! This town seemed bigger and a lot more restaurants and cafes with more slightly more life. I’m sure it would have a better feel to it if it wasn’t raining and freezing cold, as any town would.
They are all still very quiet and slow paced here, it must be the Hungarian way!
The hotel or apartment we were in was Aphrodite Hotel, a small apartment above a Greek cafe, VERY out dated and felt like you were in Greece. Mum wasn’t impressed and was absolutely not going to sleep here for two nights! It was what it was. We were on slow pace here because of the weather went to the tourist information and they told us lots of museums are shut on a Monday so that wasn’t the news we needed as it was Monday!
Cafe, food and drink before we start. This time it was a latte and on the menu they love their soups so I had the strawberry cream and soft cheese dumplings because I keep seeing it on menus as starters everywhere but it came out tasting of melted strawberry ice cream, lovely but not what I expected, although not sure what I expected haha.
Strawberry wine they se to have here too but it’s clear so maybe very sweet or more of a sherry/port or sweet wine.
We went to the minaret, the 140m with 98 steps inside where you could climb it. So me and dad did! Don’t do it if your claustrophobic or have fears of height. Honestly if people climbed this and you had people coming up and down you would 10000% not be able to cross on the stairs it barely fitted one person and on the top you had to walk around with your back against the wall and looking out because it was so tight. b*****ed if you were carrying a little holiday weight! Haha.
Mum was down the bottom, we came back down heavy on the knees but not as hard as climbing up much to our surprise.
Next we walked around and thought against the small hike in the next town so we changed our plans around and headed to the valley of the beautiful women today where there were 48 wine cellars all in a circle. It was around 2km outside of town. (Szepassonyvolgy) a lot we’re closed a lot we’re open, it was Monday so very quiet. We made our fun, but there was a lot to see and get around. The wine tour began!! At £1 a glass we were going to get drunk haha. We went into number 16, where we tried free samples of the red bull blood wine and the women reminded me of a Scandanavian from frozen up in the wooden hut. Haha. Very nice but not our taste. Number 18 had good music, 22 had good cheese platter, 34 our favourite!! Sweet wine was delicious and rose was just right, pleasant man and tasty snacks! 47, absolute w***er. Fire heaters a table drinking, we sat down took our coats off, he comes to us with a glass of wine in his hand and abruptly says sorry private party and turn the heater off next to me. Rude and ignorant, bad ass reviews were given there!
We went up to 25, lovely lovely ambience and great wine with some lovely snacks or bread should be say and of course PICKLES!
We were going to wait for the train to go up to town but we decided to walk and good job of it because it didn’t come past us at all! Too late to go back and come out and mum wanted to limit time in the apartment to a minimum haha. So we found a little Pizza place had some flat beer a pizza and I think a salad but by this time I was half cut and I have had a brain fart.
Nice night sleep (for me and dad anyways) mum slept all of 1 hour I think. Wasn’t too hot for me as I turned the radiator off but it was warm! The little lady brought us bread and met cheese and salad with coffee in the morning to eat. It was nice, a little funny in that kitchen from the 40s. Raining, yuck! So we didn’t bother rushing to get up and around. But museums should be open and there was a wine cellar we could go to which if open to its original form was 140km in length under the city. That would be cool and then the camera and telescope observatory museum! We trudged through the wet rain and walked around for a little while again very quiet and little people about. The cellar, had 4 opening times on it with two different times for tours and it stated English tours every day at 10am he opened the door another grumpy old man and pointed at the sign English tours on weekends only. Greaaaaat. So we went to the observatory, boiling in this grand huge building. Some of the exhibits didn’t have English on as we went up the levels which we started doubting if any of them would have English. They don’t cater well for this given that ever is the 2nd biggest city from Budapest to visit.
We got to floor 5 or 6 and the proper exhibit started, the signs had English on them! Pheeeew. But the people working there spoke zero English. So the boards it was. Very interesting about astronomy and telescopes. Didn’t realise that the Bermuda Triangle has ships lost because there are so many active volcanoes under the sea erupting that the the sea produces so many bubbles which makes the sea too light and impossible for the ships to float on so they sink. And same with the air the planes don’t have enough air pockets to fly through it!
We got to the top there was a dark room where we wanted to go in but got shouted at in Hungarian by a grumpy little old man and then we had to wait four minutes for a tour, good job really because we gate crashed what seemed to be a walking tour of a group from Germany maybe who had an English translator for the Hungarian tour guide. Marvellous! The telescope was in the roof of one of the towers and in the 16-18th century they used it for fun, a white circle table in the middle of the room w which when dark and they moved these three long gold poles hanging from the ceiling they were able to look at the city outside. Very cool to look at! Also found out that there was a huge priest university in Eger and 17 churches/chapels!
Afterwards we went for a walk to the Turkish baths to sus it out and then chilled at the room for a little while before going back to the Turkish baths for a dip in the cold and hot pools and sauna and steam room because what else do you do on a rainy day! We started talking to an older English couple who were doing the inter-railing for 3 months!
We bumped into them afterwards aswell when we went for dinner, lovely dinner in the place I think we originally booked for a hotel. Great wine and despite the weather a great time in Eger!
