Our bus was at 9.30am just down the road from our hotel so we braved the walk in the heat and braved they 'tuk tuk sir madam' from every driver along the riverfront.
We paid $2 more for a tidy bus that got their quicker aswell. The bus was a 'VIP minibus' it had about 12 people in it, wifi and it played the three Rambo films the entire way which was good.
The journey took around 5 hours, the bus stop was right around the corner from our hostel which was handy.
We walked down to the hostel.
It's a lovely hostel, a big square building, all white. With a common area out the front bedrooms all around the outside and a pool in the middle.
The rooms are clean and simple. Just three bunk beds and six wooden lockers stacked up. Its nice here and the atmosphere is really chilled and laid back.
We sat around the pool for a little while, it was so refreshing jumping in clean water and not salt water as we usually are if we are near the seaside. Backpacker Budget problems! Haha.
The showers are communal - of course. But they are surprisingly really nice. One of the best showers since we have been away, it's powerful and the controls for the hot water actually work!
We ventured out to the beach for a bite to eat.
We came back up and of course we ended up sitting in a gentlemen's bar what looked like. A bunch of old men eyeing up all the Asian girls in there. *BOFF* one of them came over to us and randomly started chatting to us, he was nice enough. He was from Dublin, went travelling to Australia on his own 9 years ago and never went back. Oh, he's 68 now as well and swears after every other word in a sentence and spits whilst he's saying it. Delicious!
He has 7 kids at home all grown up and taken over his truck business. He was two over here now as well, 4 and 9 years of age. They go to Khmer and English school 7am-4pm! And everyday he goes to this bar at 5pm and drinks, awesome role model! Frustrated me a bit, he never sees his kids! Not fair on the women or the kids.
It's really quiet about considering it's peak season and there are loads of restaurants down the main Serendipity Road towards the beach. A lot of them are near enough empty.
It was quite peaceful on the beach in the bucket chairs until we started getting harassed by children selling their bracelets hanging from coat hangers and would you believe it they were selling fireworks! They were really long things and they weren't very good but shocking hung about it. The kids were about the ages of 5-10 and the would light them and set them off for you if you bought them!!
A little toddler was doing it and shot one into the crowd from what we could see. The thai women didn't go to the rescue to stop him, the kids did!
Scott ended up buying a bracelet from one of the little lads, they speak such good English it's crazy for how young they are.
Serendipity had a lot of mixed reviews before we arrived but we like it here, it has a relaxing atmosphere. The people are friendly and the beach is really nice at night with the restaurants along the stretch. There are party bars but bars that have some music that gives it a little atmosphere.
