We had a great day yesterday (Wednesday), so much so that I was too exhausted to update the blog. We went on a round island tour with our guides Joel and Tina, and driver Maui.
We headed south as Joel told us what we would be seeing and doing during the day. We stopped for a swim at the the Blue hole at Eton. It was a small protected beach were a fresh water stream flows into the sea. Therese was startled when she entered the stream and several fish jumped out of the water almost on to the bank to avoid her. The weather was against us but we still managed to have a bit of a splash around. We drove on, our guide showed us the 'king of the forest' which was a gigantic tree. We pulled over and our guide jumped out of the van and plucked a huge 'friendly' spider from it's web. He brought it back and we each held this horrible spider. Shiann was particularly brave and held it for ages.
We were given a traditional greeting at a small village. This involved a lot of yelling and natives charging at us with spears. Apparently we were still welcome though as they then performed 3 dances for us. Our guide then led us to a hut made from the coconut tree and explained the many, many uses of the "mother tree" (coconut tree). It was an interesting and tasty lesson.
After lunch we visited a WWII airstrip and various other sites that were used by the military. We stopped at the Coca-cola bottle museum again and sat through Earnest's presentation which was almost word for word from our previous visit. I wonder how many times a day he does that speech?
We completed our trip around the island and returned to our motel around 5pm.
After an hour we set out for dinner at Le' Houstalet , a French restaurant famous for it's specialty dishes. For an entree we tried the escargot . For our mains, flying fox and wild pigeon. We all tried a little of each apart from Shiann who thought we were all crazy. The desserts were less adventurous but quite spectacular none the less.
We caught a bus back to the motel and watched "Megamind" then went to bed. Sleep was not easy however as the edge of the cyclone rattled the windows and doors all night.
Today we are trying to find out if and when we fly out. I am fairly sure our flight is going to be delayed. We still don't know how long though.
