Days 534-543, 28 Nov-7 Dec '15, Christmas arrives in Turkey! Calis Beach Christmas Fair. Highlights of the week? Had a checkup at the Dentist, replaced some broken sunglasses and, most importantly, found a fab roast chicken shop in downtown Fethiye. Danced away Wednesday night at the Beach House Restaurant, Calis - all the way until Thursday morning. Positively unheard of. Absolute highlight of the week however was the arrival of Christmas on Sunday. With sun glinting of the snowy mountains it was surreal to visit the Annual Christmas Fair along the Calis waterfront with sunscreen and sunhat still firmly in place. We bought mince pies, ate Christmas cake, had an actual cappuccino (vs. instant coffee proudly advertised as "Nescafe" at most cafes) - even bought half a kilo of bacon! Cost an arm and a leg for half a kilo - but it's been about 3 months since we've had bacon and eggs... so it was utter luxury to have that for breakfast. I've been looking for a wheat bag/heat pack for about a year now... and found a selection of home made ones at the Christmas fair - only 8 lira/A$4 - I've used it half a dozen times since Sunday! We've managed to ripen a huge stalk of bananas and took half over to our great neighbours... and within 3 hours they'd been magicked into the best banana cake ever and returned to our door - complete surprise and utterly lush with the thick Turkish yoghurt from the market. It's now less than 2 weeks until we head to Malta - so the spectre of packing is just around the corner. The time to eat our way through our pantry is therefore upon us. We are not only excited about Malta - then France - we've just been invited to Amsterdam for almost a month - so hugely, massively excited about that - I can't wait to show James that incredible city of canals, art, museum and culture.
