Murchison it was then, well there really wasn't much here
Murchison it was then, well there really wasn't much here. I chucked my gear at hostel and ran to the information centre before they closed and booked a white water rafting tour. That night I spent having a few beers and solving 3D puzzles with an Englishman and a Irishman. There was some pretty interesting conversations and some good times all round. The Irishman though reminded me (this is going to sound stupid) of one of the villains off 007 when Pierce Brosnan was playing bond. Anyway moving on then . . .
The next day I got geared up at the river side after a long bus ride full of hungry sand flies (not fun). We hit the river with an aussie family, French Tahitian couple the guide and me. They weren't all the best bunch but the guide was from NZ and I could barely understand him, I only began to get his sense of humour only until the end of the day. We hit some grade 3 and 4 rapids (next time I want to hit some grade 5 or 6), they were a little tame. We also got to swim down a grade 2 rapid which was scary at first but all good once we hit 'em. A rock jump was then next in line and I went straight to the highest one about 9m I think. So I thought yeah yeah cause iv done the bungy this will be a breeze. But my confidence was blown out of the water. I got to the top and actually realised it was pretty high. I jumped and still got a massive rush, which was awesome! I did it second time, same effect! Which was good to know that the bungy hadn't taken away all of my fear (I still got skydiving in Taupo to come yet!)
We then attempted to flip the boat for fun, we all went overboard but didn't succeed, the boat stayed upright. It was all great fun though. The next rapid we were all challenged to stand up in a circle on the edge of the boat. We did and there were some hairy moments and we couldn't stop laughing the whole way through!
The tour then finished with a barbeque by the river, while I was eating sausages millions of sand flies were eating me!! I HATE SAND FLIES!!!!!!!!! Anyway so back to the hostel to collect my gear then off to Nelson a day earlier, because there really wasn't much in Murchison.
