Clear sky, a light onshore breeze and no swell -perfect conditions for crossing the straits to Gili Trawangan. Sat with our bags on the roof of the boat with a charming diving instructor. Jumped off in ankle deep turquoise water onto coral debris and walked straight into a beach café that knocked up a dark liquid sludge that tasted of coffee.
A-lo marched off into the heat to suss out accommodation and returned 30 minutes later looking seriously dehydrated. Once I had poured a litre of water down her neck we hailed down a pony and trap trotted down the sand path to our chosen bungalow. On closer inspection of the bed and air-con, we checked out after half and hour and moved down the beach to Warna Home Stay - another bungalow with a sea view. Basic but functional- it had all the mod-cons like a bed, running water, a light and a table. We even had Gucci towels. The outside bathroom however had a small downside. The loo caught the sun for most of the day, so a prolonged sit down mid afternoon would require a prior coating with Factor 30.
Put our swimmers on and headed across the track onto the sand and into the sea to cool down…..Good island life here.
Had lunch at the Beach Bar - we ordered off the western breakfast menu. I had forgotten how good fried bacon tastes.
Siesta. By 3 pm the activity level on the island looked like the place had been gassed.
Swim. Book. Swim
Met up with Igor and Brecha (Dutch flashpackers) for happy hour at 645 at Horizontal Bar. Four "Diet cuba libres, no lime, must be Bacardi" later we decamped to Tir Na Nog as it seemed quite lively. Pizzas, several Bintang and a lot of laughs later we left as the action started to die down at 130. Slept very well - finally some efficient air-con!!!
