Day 51: Millaa Millaa
What is that wet stuff that falls from the sky! We had almost forgotten what rain was like, we haven't had any since we were in Adelaide but we had sporadic showers today.
The day started with a little bit of cleaning including the outside of the van. Darren got to use his new water broom that he bought at the caravan and camping show, he's pretty impressed with it.
Next on today's itinerary was a visit to Mamu. Mamu is a rainforest with a designated walk through it that includes a raised walk through the canopy. The rainforest was spectacular and is recovering really well after experiencing some destruction from cyclone Larry in 2006 and cyclone Yasi last year. Hard to believe that we were in such an arid environment less than a month ago yet we are still in the same country.
We finished walking through Mamu at about lunch time. We attempted to stop for lunch at a quaint tea house but it was closed. I would have thought Sunday would have been the busiest day, but none the less business was not operating, neither was the supermarket or the petrol station. Funny how things are different in small towns.
So we continued into the main street of Millaa Millaa and made possibly one of the worst decisions of the trip so far, to grab some takeaway and eat in the park. The park was lovely but the food was nothing short of revolting. Live and learn!
After consuming our deplorable food(?), we continued exploring waterfalls. First was Millaa Millaa falls, which was the busiest one we have been to to date. It is a popular swimming area but seems it was only 20 degrees today I'm surprised anyone would want to swim.
Next we visited Zillie Falls. This was the adventure of the day. We travelled a seldom used path to the base of the falls. It is seldomly used for a good reason but we enjoyed the trek.
The final falls we visited was Elinjaa. The showers started as we were walking back to the car. We didn't stop there though, next stop was Crawford lookout where we followed the path down to North Johnson River Lookout. The rain had stopped again by this stage.
The path took us through another beautiful part of the rainforest. We had to climb over fallen trees and cross muddy rocks whilst the path meandered down the hill. The kids enjoyed seeing all the scrub turkeys that live in the area. They were on cassowary watch all day, but the turkeys were the best they could do. It once again started to rain during our walk to the lookout but the rainforest canopy protected us so we didn't really feel it.
That was our day and we are all tired from it. The kids are all fast asleep and Darren is watching 'Kerry Packers War'.
Tomorrow is forecast rain so we have a couple of options in activities, we will wait to see what the weather is like before deciding.
