Day 2 did not go exactly as planned. Today the family enjoyed a great breakfast at the Hotel in Fargo, and got ready for our days events. We drove onto the Interstate and noticed the wind was pretty strong. Within 1 mile of driving we heard a loud noise and felt the van shake and looked out the rear view window. What I saw was that the camper roof blew open on the left side completely. Green cushions were flying through the air and we had to pull over fast! One latch that held down the top ripped off completely, and the leg for the top bent and smashed through the wood side of the camper.
I was able to somehow bend the arms back straight and bring the top back down, and at least latch the remaining latches. We limped back off the interstate and into West Fargo to check the damage. This was 10:00AM Sunday, and nothing is open until noon. We met some nice people at a gas station who offered to help, and told me where the auto parts store was. We waited out our 2 hours by calling Mike and Jeni and uploading pictures to the laptop. We had a quick meal and playtime at McDonalds and went to O'Reilly's auto parts for ratchet straps. The more we talked about it, the more nervous we are to take the camper on the rest of the trip. We called many different storage companies, and could not find any open. After getting 2 ratchet straps from the parts store, we went back to the Holiday Inn Express with our tail between our legs and checked back in.
I (Robert) went into the computer room and called the first storage place on the internet and got a guy 'on call'. He sold us his last space, and I collected the van and headed right out there. We'll leave the trailer there in Fargo, and come back to get it after vacation.
The big problem now is where to store everything we had in the trailer. We spent yet another 90 minutes at the storage place putting together a trailer hitch platform, just like the one I have at home, and covering poor little Ugly Betty for its 3 week sit. It is outside, but its covered and fenced in.
So we're back at the hotel, ate some pizza and doing another swimming night. Tomorrow we'll go do what we wanted to do today, and the adventure goes on. I'm sorry to say Lucas family, Joy says this is typical Lucas Luck on vacation. I think its part of the adventure, so we'll keep moving on and see how it goes. Now we use Mega Tent, thank god we brought is as backup.
More tomorrow, hopefully happier stories!
