Today, we went to the Port Au Choix national historic site. It was larger than the whole park around fort Amherst. The history surrounded ancient indigenous and slight less ancient Inuit, and hundreds of years ago french fishermen. The really excellent part of it was that we got very close to two wild caribou. Well trapper got scared and left me and I slowly got closer and closer for better photos. It was great to see a caribou. I did not expect that on this trip. To see a mother and calf was just beyond. And as we were leaving a large Owl flew along beside the car for a long time and very close. It was probably 10-15 feet away and was there for like 15 seconds as we drove. It was very cool.
We then went and saw the thrombolites in Flowers Cove. Basically they are large rock formations from some of the earliest forms of life. The formations look like enormous flowers hence the name flowers cove.
We also made a brief stop at the Deep Cove wintering site. It claims to be one of the last seasonal human migratory sites. Basically the whole community spend summers on the coast and then moved together to a wooded area every year. It was kind of meh.
Anyways I think it was a great day just for the caribou. We are on the ferry now to spend a couple days in Labrador. Not sure how great internet access will be so you may lose us for a couple days.
