Oh, I forgot yesterday we went to bidgood's grocery store and stocked up on tons of Newfoundland foods. We got Moose Pie, Moose sausage, Rabbit Pie, Bakeapple Pie, Partridge Berry Pie, fish cakes, purity products as well as some basic groceries for our stay.
Today, we saw a ton of little sights. We strated at Cupids Plantation. The oldest english colony in North America. It is a provincial historic site and an active archeological dig. The guide has worked there for years including digging. She gave us an amazing personilizd tour. She really made the site. It was probably close to an hour for the tour.
We then went to Brigus for Hawthorne Cottage National historic site. It was the NL home of Capt Bob Bartlett, who did numerous artic expeditions, including the maritime portion of the first successful expedition to the North Pole. He then moved to the US to obtain funding for many more artic expeditions where he populated most artic zoos in the US. It was nice.
We then went to this tunnel through rock that leads to a harbour. It was pretty but apparently no one really knows why anyone created this.
I should also say that through out these sites we saw lots of great scenery.
We then headed back to St John's where we had lunch at the Duke of Duckworth. I had toutons and trapper had fish and chips. Litterally nothing had changed there.
We then went to the Commisart house and Newman wine vaults provincial historic site. The commisart's house was alright... just an old nice house really. The Newman wine vaults were not that interesting but they did give us a glass of Newman's Ruby Port to drink while we toured. I think I will be trying more Ruby Ports, they are young ports, I had never tried a Ruby port and it is really good.
We were really progressing very quickly, so we went for a drive around quidi vidi and then up signal hills where we went up the tower and through the museum, before stopping for a hot chocolate. Our national parks past and the free provincial musuems have really been saving us a lot on our excursions.
We ended the touring day with a trip to Bowring Park, which has one of my favourite statues anywhere (peter pan). And a nicer than I remember duck pond and fountain. We lingered a while before heading back home to pop our Moose pie in the oven.
We ended the day with moose pie and lounging. A very good, interesting day and a relaxing evening.
