So, when we got off the boat we already knew the weather forecast had changed and by late Sunday or Monday the rain was expected to pour. So, Trapper called the boat tour company to find out if we could take today's boat tour instead of Monday that we booked. They litterally held the boat back for a few minutes until we arrived.
There were thousands of Puffins, Common Murrs and Razorbill Auks. They filled the hill side and air around the boat. We also saw many hump back whale spouts and I saw two backs popping out of the water and one tail going down for a dive. The tail stuck totally out of the water for a moment before flapping and descending.
After our boat tour we went to Ches's for fish and chips. It was just as good as I remembered but the dressing for the fries was way better than I remember. Oh it is so good, there will be much more dressing before this trip is over.
We then drove out to Cape Spear. We walked up to the lighthouse and around the cliffs and through the WWII bunkers. They restored the bunkers since the last time I was here and even had a slide show in one of the amunition buildings. Trapper thought the amunition depot was like her dad's potato waehouse but shorter. The bunker was much more interesting now that it has lighting and has been swept and some of the walls re-enforced.
The scenery was as beautiful as always.... but the one amazing thing was that there were so many whales out there. We stopped sevel times to watch the water for whales and we saw so many. Lots of spouts and tails and a few backs. The bacs were likely to far away for us to see but I am most excited by seeing the tails and there were tons of them. So, I give two thumbs up to that. I kind of think it might be nice that they were so far away because photos would not show much of anything but by focusing your eyes you could see everything. So, you were focussed just on what you could see. It was great.
After Cape Spear, we dropped our stuff off at our humble apartment. We then headed for a drive around downtown and up Signal hill. We viewed everything from on top of Signal Hill for a while until we descended to George St.
George street was way dirtier and stinkier than I remember. We went to three bars and were turned away. Well one was outside seating only... Trapper was cold when we sat and ate at an inside table. One wanted $5 cover for supper. I forget the problem at the third one. So, we went to Celtic Hearth which was a place I had been before. Food was good, not exceptional. I had jiggs dinner, Trapper had the club sandwich as is her standard. We then went for a second walk up and down George street. Trapper thought that the outside of the stirp clubs could use some work.
Then a good night's sleep.
