Today we decided to take in some culture by heading to the famous Thai temples. We took a short tuk tuk trip to the Chaophraya River to catch the taxi boat up to the Wat Phra Kaeo district where the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha stands. This was really nice, as it gave us the opportunity to take in those typical Thai river side wooden shanty huts and the long boats that darted about the water ways.
Once we got off the boat, we headed straight to the Grand Palace. By this point the sun was fully out to play and we walked around taking in all the various style Thai temples. This place was amazing and nothing like we have seen before, it held a kind of power of the Thai people and the history told all. The main focal point was the emerald Buddha, which was in fact jade. The short version goes that it was found in 1434 as just a plain buddha made out of plaster, however after a few years the plaster fell away and his fat green belly was revealed and it was then that they decided it was a very sacred emerald buddha.
Throughout the day in the hostel, we seemed to pick up straddlers along the way and ended up going to dinner with an Ozzy, Brit and Canadian. It seems that most people travel alone and after that its couples, so maybe were in demand! It was nice to here a few different voices and tales.
We have booked a trip for the next two days so were off out at 6.30am and will not be in touch until we get back.
