So we have arrived safe and sound in Thailand and apparently we left at just the right time. Upon leaving the UK the weather was diminishing fast, but they were kind enough to defrost the wings for us and off we went! On arrival, it was 32 degrees not a bad swap hey, and as we begin our journey were already worlds apart!
It wasn't long before we got our first taste of Bangkok jumping in the taxi to the hostel. Our driver stated a price and very pleased with ourselves we bartered him down to about half, and then realised shortly after that it was meant to be on the meter and probably ended up paying more. You live and learn hey!
Our first hostel was really nice and clean which was a relief since the area in city we were staying in was a bit dilapidated, even for Bangkok standards. We settled in and cleaned up before going out to explore and get some food. We wondered how long it would be before a city with so much culture and activity surprised us, and it didn't take very long.....(Since my story telling sucks, I shall be passing over to Mr Grills for this)
Well... We started exploring one of the main busy strips, which was pretty packed, but mainly with Thai people, rather than tourists, which was kind of cool. After we hounded off what seemed like the entire population of tuk tuk drivers (little taxi bike things) we stumbled across a market full of well... Useless rubbish, but it was still good to get a feel of how they do things over here. Basically, it's packed, busy, crazy and different, and obsessed with Olympic sporting events such as ping pong! ;-)
We left the market and entered an area full of restaurants... Restaurants, with a varied meaning of either sit down, moon lit, waiter service, all the way to a single women, with three kids, selling, erm... well fried twigs and stuff. We were all set to go diving into culture and try the local cuisine... 2 hours later we found a place we were both happy to give a try!
I (Adam (Grillz)) had typical Thai style noodle dish, which was really nice. Adz had a typical Thai style noodle dish with added chilli peppers (bad move) and a local delicacy. First of all Adz puts his months of hot food training to the test with the peppers and nearly makes his eyes fall out, then to finish off the meal he found what seemed to be an optional beetle in his dish. Needless to say, he didn't finish his first taste of Bangkok.
