There is only one city on earth that can be seen from space, and only one city on earth that can live up to a reputation like that, Vegas! I won't dilly dally around this place was amazing and with not long here, we had to make the most out of it.
We arrived late afternoon after a crowded low cost bus journey from LA. To follow suit we checked into a low cost hotel too. When I say low, I mean really low it cost us £28 each for three nights! It had the basic amenities though, an enormous casino, 18 screen cinema, bowling alley, three swimming pools and a 10,000 seat arena, not bad hey!
To make the most out of the remainder of the day we headed to the strip for our first Vegas outing. First impressions were extended beyond belief, a fantasy land that'll never let you down. Take your money, but never let you down. We booked ourselves on a trip to the Grand Canyon for the next day and decided to have a few beers, watch a show and gamble! I know it is a twist on an old saying but "When in Vegas...do as the world does". The show we watched was a variety show called "V", which was good for the price we paid but we left wanting a little more. The gambling actually went well, we left with a profit and a gut full of free beers too! One night down, two more to go!
Early the next morning we were picked up for our tour to the Grand Canyon. En route, we stopped off at the Hoover Dam. The dam stands at 726 ft and was once the tallest in the world. Built to restrain the destructive Colorado River in 1930 the dam alone took 112 lives. A popular story holds that the last man to die working on the dam, died 13 years to the day, after the first. More coincidental than that, the last person was actually the son of the first! We continued onto the canyon where we were heading to the south rim; the deepest and widest point of the canyon, at 277 miles long and 18 miles wide. What we were about to see unequalled anything on earth. The cliff views and slopes of this tremendous natural wonder were breathtaking. However, the Grand Canyon is more than a gorged carved through the rocks. It is more than an awe-inspiring view. This canyon is a gift that beats what you experience. Its beauty and size humbles you. It's timeless. In this vast space, you find solace from your hectic life.
Our last day in Vegas and the night of the champion's league final, well our morning, was a good day. We watched the football and then headed to the strip, where we dined at the Monte Carlo, had drinks at the Palazzo, gambled at the Venetian and to end the night, watched a real show at the MGM. All around a great day that cost a little bit more than usual, but as I said, we were making a profit! We watched a Cirque du Soleil show called "Kà" that had an amazing set and ended with a firework show, indoors!
Vegas...what a city! We loved every minute here and wasted none. As of all good things, it came to a quick end, but in a place like this too much of a good thing will leave you with empty pockets and a very sore head! Next stop Miami.
