After leaving in awe of Las Vegas, we boarded a flight to Miami where we planned to spend a few days in the sun relaxing by the beach, before heading further north of Florida to Orlando. The sun was shining bright and after an altercation with a 25 stone woman, the relaxing began!
We checked into a hostel that we found on the internet, that gave more free stuff away than you would deem possible. We had Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided, free beer on occasion and endless other finance helping freebies. With New York on the horizon, it was a great time to save those nickel, dimes and quarters.
After a few days relaxing on South Beach, it was time to venture around the City. The surrounding areas in Miami are great if you have money and lots of it. Here every other house you see has a garden backing out onto the bay with a boat dock, and a multimillion pound yacht. In fact, we actually spotted our first celebrity on the street, plus he was British! No not Simon Cowell, much better than him, the one and only Craig David! We were star struck so we retired back to our hostel/soup kitchen, where we booked a tour to the Everglades.
The Everglades National Park is a protected world heritage site that is made up almost entirely by swamp and marshlands. A booming habitat for many creatures but most commonly known for its thriving population of both alligators and crocodiles, the only place in the world where they both naturally coexist. We were taken to a wildlife centre on the wetlands where we got the chance to see the Everglades, practically the only way you can. On an air-boat. The boat, which is propelled by a giant engine driven propeller, is a low impact way of moving around on the shallow swampland. When we hit some open water, they opened up the throttle and drove around like a joy rider in Tesco's car park! Along the way, we managed to see some of the ecosystem here and quite a few alligators too. Before heading back, we got the chance to hold a year old alligator, which was surprisingly soft and about as cute as Grillz!
To conclude Florida we ventured back up to Orlando where we saw out the rest of our time and rekindled a few childhood memories. The price to visit the parks varied between expensive and extortion, but we managed to get a good price online for an unlimited 7 days pass to Universal Studios. The park was broken up into Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, so we split our days jumping between the two. Both parks are based on the films and productions that Universal have produced over the years. Incorporated into the theme park there were attractions such as a Hulk roller coaster, The Simpson's in a virtual world, a 4D Shrek movie and an animal show with tricks and stunts by animals from films. It was actually quite nice to reminisce and let loose for a few days on the rides etcetera.
In between the parks, we took out a day to visit the Kennedy Space Center. It was a geat day out with lots to offer. We experienced the sounds and sensations of a shuttle launch in their new $60 million dollar simulator, got spun around to 4 g's, met an astronaut and witnessed the preparations for the next shuttle launch. Throughout the day, we learnt a lot about historical landmarks, missions past and present, future space plans and plenty of facts. Did you know the last person to step on the moon was 37 years ago? Whilst we were there, a shuttle was going through inspection before launch. The shuttle called "Endeavour" which was wheeled onto the launch pad a month prior, which was now in its final stages before being ready to launch for a mission to the International Space Station. We ended the day on a positive note after an encounter with an astronaut. It took him 30 years to become one and at fifty he finally got into space, a perfect lesson on how never to give up on your dreams. With the economic downturn and both being unemployed, it was exactly what we needed!
So after visiting every single destination bar one, it was time to jump on a plane and head to the Big Apple. Houston we have a problem!
