With Hawaii done and dusted, Los Angeles became our next destination and definitely a city with an edge. Not long after arrival, it soon became evident that LA definitely lives up to its animated, extravagant and edgy persona.
It is an understatement to say that we were looking forward to LA; so much so, we did a little extra research on the plane. We were reading up on places to go and how to make the most out of our time, when we stumbled across this article "Gangs, poverty, crime and drive-by shootings are just a few of the negative images - not entirely undeserved - associated with this district". This district just so happened to be the place where we were staying for the week! You may have heard of the infamous Compton, the home of anything gang related e.g bloods and cribs, that was our neighbouring district less then a mile away. At this point there is no need to worry, currently we are on a beach in Miami and have no more holes now than what we started with!
Two earthquakes, one police related incident, a stalker, David Hasselhoff, a clairvoyant palm reader and lots of very expensive gates! Just a few of the very errr interesting incidents that happened to us whilst in LA. Our first day started with an earthquake measuring 5 on the richtor scale and the biggest California had seen in a long while. It ended in police entering our room to arrest a guy who was on the run after stalking some girl! The middle involved catching up on sleep and was quite frankly, gratefully uneventful!
The next day we headed to the illustrious Hollywood Boulevard where we followed the walk of fame passing the stars of stars, including Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and The Simpsons to name a few. Whilst we were there we even got ourselves into the audience of some American Idol filming, you might see us, we were the ones at the back doing the fake waves and cheers! That was only the start of how false LA can really be. We booked ourselves on a cheap open bus tour to see a few of the Hollywood attractions. It took us out to hot spots such as Sunset Blvd and Rodeo Drive before going to Beverly Hills, the mere mention of here conjures images of fame and wealth, we fit right in, cruising around in our sawn off top mini bus! The main part of the trip was the guilty pleasure of a tour to the stars' homes. A cliché I know but it really was the best way to get a general sense of how and where the celebrities and Los Angeles' upper class live, hence the very expensive gates! The night ended with our second earthquake too, we really were being spoilt!
America's Got Talent, the reality TV show, was being filmed in Hollywood whilst we were there and we landed ourselves a pair of tickets. The show was held in a beautiful auditorium in Downtown LA and minus the waiting around, it was really good. We got to see the hosts David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan who were surprisingly real as opposed to the lack of reality to the show. They got us to do prompted chants and even a standing ovation rising in order of birthdays!! Minus the lack of reality and being American, add the British, and you've got a much better show!
On our last day, we ventured over to Santa Monica where we went to Venice beach, famous for being, well a human zoo! Known for its mankini clad wannabe Scwarzeneggers and other eccentrics, an alien would feel at home there! We spent the day walking along the beach front where there was lots of street performers and stalls. We stopped at a psychic who read our palms, he told Grills that he will be consistent and comfortable, and that I would be a writer! I reckon its just wrinkles from writing this blog for 5 months! We relaxed on the beach for the rest of the day before having to head back to pack, as tomorrow we will be on our 12th flight to Las Vegas.
