We arrived in Lima at about 10:30am and my cousin was waiting for us at the bus terminal along with my mum's friend who kindly offered to take us on a city tour in his car seeing as we only had one day before we set off for the jungle. Eddy said she felt famous being chauffered around the city in a nice car. There were lots of monuments around the city including gifts from the french and chinese colonies and a war monument for the war against Chile. The city had a mix of buildings with some very European style houses and a replica of the justice house in Brussels as well as some Inca ruins. Lima is a big city in which 10 million people live (one third of the population of Peru). We visited two museums which explained a lot of Peruvian history and had various ceramics and traditional gold jewellery, tools and paintings. Afterwards we went to Larcomar in Milaflores and had lunch on the edge of the sea. Unfortunately I was served raw chicken and ate a piece before realising so I was not best pleased and after an argument with the waiter he eventually took my lunch off the bill. For dessert we went to a bakery and had churros filled with caramel. We love these and had some more later in the day too. In the afternoon we visited the San Francisco church underneath which are the catacombs where 25,000 people were buried. The underground burial area was excavated in the 1950s and archaelogists laid out lots of human bones for display. It was quite disturbing at first to see them all! The bones were only made up of femurs and skulls because limestone was used in the burial to disintegrate the bodies to make more space. Lime destroys all bones except the strong ones. We really enjoyed the tour round the tombs as it was really interesting and we were entertained by a group of americans who kept cracking jokes which made the experience a bit more lighthearted. In the evening we went to a park which has lots of different water fountains and displays. It was really pretty as they were all lit up in different colours. We ran through them timing it right so that we didn't get wet. There were lots of people there including lots of soaking wet children. We also saw three different wedding couples having photos taken by all the different displays. After a long day of touring we arrived back at my cousins house and went to sleep ready for an early wake up call to go to the airport for our flight to Puerto Maldonado.
