We arrived very early in Arequipa around 6am and got a taxi to our hostel. Our beds weren't ready til check in time at 12 so we sat in the common area and after about an hour we were allowed into a lounge where Eddy had a nap and I caught up on the news at home. Whilst Eddy was napping people starting getting up so I sat in the kitchen with a group from the hostel and ate some breakfast with them whilst swapping travel stories. After a while Eddy woke up and ate breakfast and we both took showers before heading out into the town in search for a tour to Colca Canyon. We eventually found a good tour office and booked our tour to start the next day. Afterwards we joined a free 2 hour walking tour of the city. The city was quite modern and pretty. Along the tour we visited a few interesting parts of the city such as the market, a couple of restaurants where we were given little tasters, and an Alapaca wool attraction. We were allowed to go into the pen with the alpacas and llamas and take photos. We were then shown and taught about all the different natural and artifcial colours of wool. The softest wool came from the vecuna which is an animal from the camel family like alpacas and llamas but lives in the wild. Its wool is considered the highest quality natural fibre in the world. There were two women knitting with the wool and it was amazing to see the patterns they were able to make off the top of their heads and so neatly. On the tour I tried the local ice cream called queso helado. This translates as cheese ice cream but there wasn't any cheese in the ingredients, the name referred to the round shape the ice cream was kept in. It was tasty, more icy than creamy but interesting to try. Eddy had a local fruit ice smoothie instead made with a fruit called maracuya. After the walking tour we decided to try and find a good deal for a tour in our next destination, Puno. After asking a few agencies we decided to book the tour through the same agency we used for the colca canyon tour as they offered the best service (picking us up from the bus station when we arrived at 4am) and the best price. In the late afternoon we went back to the hostel to relax and Eddy had a little nap before we went out for dinner. A lot of the local restaurants had closed early so we ended up having chinese. Back at the hostel we put on a film in the movie room but Eddy fell asleep part way through so she headed to bed whilst I finished watching the film with a really nice lady from New Zealand.
