Lovely sleep in, in another huge, comfortable bed. Went down for breakfast in the lovely dining room that overlooks the pool. What a gem this place is. Massive spread of delicious food to choose from.
Got ready & went out to explore the old walled city. Not 5 minutes from our hotel, we could see how enormous this citadel was. It would have had a huge moat (now gardens) with wide drawbridges. How wonderful that it is now a thriving community of homes, businesses & shops.
Walked along the stone roads (apparently each stone was laid individually) - a bit like walking with Dr Scholl shoes!! Lots of touristy shops & eateries & a beautiful clock tower.
Wandered down a little alleyway & found a local artist's shop with handmade jewellery, where Scott bought me a gorgeous pair of earrings. A bit further & another handmade jeweller where Scott looked at some leather bracelets. Ended up talking to the owner (Nick) for about an hour - he walked us to the local catacomb, showed us the hidden priest's door, an old & typical house of the walled city & around a few shops. He decided we were his 'new friends' in typical Greek hospitality.
Got totally lost in the maze of roads & Squares. Found an exit (there are several) & we were suddenly right on the sea front. Those stunning blue waters that are so warm! Rhodes is famous for the ancient site of the Colossus (c 280BC), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. Rhodes was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1988. Took the 'Hop On Hop Off Bus' to see the city. We are definitely staying on the best side of town.
Walked along the harbour to see the superyachts & old windmills then decided to catch a cab home, as we had no idea how to get back to the hotel!
Spent the afternoon by the beautiful pool with piña coladas & then got ready for dinner. Back into the walled city but this time we stayed on the main road!! No deviating!! Lots of spruikers for restaurants & we chose one that had the highest level so we could look out over the Square. So much fun to people-watch over swordfish (for me) & a seafood platter (for Scotti). What a vibrant place. Once again, nothing closes till after midnight.
Went back to our hotel - easy this time - & sat at the rooftop bar. My new favourite drink - Live The Myth. (Got the recipe).
I can see why my Dad loved Rhodes the best of all the Greek islands (& the reason we came here). So so beautiful!!
