After our Greek Wedding, it was up reasonably early (for holidays) to catch the minivan to Akrotiri - an archeological site that's currently being excavated. 4000 years ago, this city was buried under volcanic ash after the largest eruption in the last 10,000 years. Larger than Pompeii or Krakatoa. I didn't know that! The city is in almost perfect condition & archeologists are working slowly to uncover more. The ingenuity of that age is astounding. Stones cut in perfect squares. How? 3 stories in some houses with a form of indoor & external plumbing! Incredible.
We had an hour's tour, which was really informative.
Next, it was off to 3 different wineries for tastings & food pairings. Our guide was once again so knowledgeable & enjoyable to listen to. Santorini's vines are grown close to the ground in a basket shape to protect the fruit from the sun & wind. So different to our orderly vineyards. The samples were very generous & we were with a lovely group - some from America & Helsinki.
A fantastic 6-hour tour & well worth it.
Had a nap by the pool in the late afternoon & then went out for dinner at a lovely top floor terrace. Lamb moussaka for me & a pizza for Scotti.
Another wonderful day.
