Tuscany - 04/09/2010 to 12/09/2010
We arrived at the farmhouse in Lucca after midnight, tired and slightly irritable after losing our way on several occasions. Where was a sat nav when you needed one. After a glass or two of wine everything was right with the world and we fell into bed, looking forward to exploring our surroundings by the light of day.
We woke up to sound of the neighboring rooster and brilliant sunshine pouring in through the windows. The farmhouse had it's own swimming pool and was completely private. Set against a backdrop of rolling green mountains, small picturesque villages, olive trees and vineyards. The perfect setting for rest and relaxation, this was a little slice of heaven which we couldn't wait to sample. As it was bright and sunny we drove to the lovely seaside town of Viareggio, with it's art nouveau style and laid back charm. We walked on the beach and dipped our feet in the water enjoying the sights and breathing in the fresh sea air. After a spot of Lunch on the beach we were off to Forte Dei Marmi to rub shoulders with the wealthy and fashionable whilst having a coffee in one of the many outdoor cafes. This town exudes wealth and there is no shortage of designer boutiques and extravagant cars. After a reality check we were off again to stock up on supplies in nearby Pietrasanta, where Michelangelo lived and worked. This is where the marble statue of David in Florence was carved and where you can purchase your own copy of the David or a Venus De Milo.
The following day we visited nearby Lucca, surrounded by a massive 16th century brick wall. At the top of the wall is the Passeggiata delle Mura which is a beautiful tree-lined promenade that encircles the town offering many views of the mountains in the distance and the delightful town below. We strolled through the streets of Lucca, taking in the sights like the Duomo di San Martino which houses the Volto Santo (holy image). It is said that the wooden crucifix was sculpted to bear an accurate image of Jesus. Lucca is a charming town filled with cobbled streets and enticing shops, where vendors sell beautiful ceramics as well as fresh produce that is so rich in color and flavor.
Our next destination was Assisi in the Region of Umbria, birthplace of Saint Francis who is the patron saint of Italy. Driving towards Assisi we are met with a beautiful sight. It appears in the distance as a medieval castle surrounded by high walls. It has an almost magical aura to it. Assisi is situated on top of Mount Subasio and commands a spectacular view of the Valle Umbria. Even amongst all the throngs of tourists there is still an atmosphere of tranquility. There are many view points that look out onto the green and lush landscape, offering breath taking views and photo opportunities aplenty. It is said that it is one of the most visited places on earth.
We then drove to Cortona, a lovely hill top town between Tuscany and Umbria which offered beautiful views of the valley below. We walked down the cobbled streets taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the local lifestyle, enjoying the relaxed mood of the town and treated ourselves to a cocktail, we were spoilt with a breathtaking sunset before we bid farewell and headed back to the farmhouse in Lucca.
The next day was dedicated to chilling out by the pool and basking in the heat of the sun. We are after all on holiday and a little break from driving is just what we needed.
The next day we ventured out again to explore more of the Tuscan region. Arezzo is the provincial capital of Tuscany and has a lovely historic centre and large almost circular Piazza Grande that is encircled by restaurants, cafes and little boutiques.
As we are all lovers of wine a visit to Montepulciano was a must and since it it was also the place where Patrizia was conceived we just had to go. The minute we walked into the old town, we all fell in love with it's quaint and romantic vibe. We sat at an outdoor restaurant with our big glasses of red wine and quickly adapted to the slow pace of life. Ah, this is what life is about, watching the world go by whilst enjoying a fab meal accompanied with great wine and sharing the moment with fantastic friends. Feeling rather tipsy and red-cheeked we decided to have a look around at the quriky shops along the steep cobbled street. Everything looked enticing and alluring. We finally made our way to Piazze Grande which is the highest point of the town. Even though we were out of breath from the steep walk, the splendid views made up for it.
Maybe next time we could stay longer to fully enjoy the beauty of this town. For now at least a few bottles of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano would keep the memories alive.
Tuscany is an amazing region, with hilltop towns, cypress trees, countless vineyards and breathtaking scenery. You could never tire of it's beauty and the passion the locals have when it comes to producing mouth watering food and wine. It has been a fantastic holiday and we all feel relaxed and rejuvenated as well as a little envious of the lifestyle we are saying ''arrivederci'' to. If you ever find yourself in Lucca do frequent the Michelin starred butterfly restaurant the food is simple sublime.
After a week of sunshine, lounging by the pool and a few mini adventures, we were on the road again. Last stop Bologna. We only spent the evening here as we had a flight to catch the next day. We walked around the city centre and took in the sights and ended our time in Bologna with a classic Bolognese for dinner.
