Tamara's Travels
Hola!
Happy Easter! Thought I would sit down and write this on Easter Day so you would know I'm thinking of you all at home today! Aah!
Well, first of all this postcard comes with a warning: May be hazardous to your health if prone to jealousy or sitting inside at work watching rain outside!
There, have warned you, so can now lift all sensors and tell you exactly how PERFECT my Whitsunday sailing experience was!
We arrived in Airlie Beach on Tuesday, at the crack of dawn and had some fun there until Wednesday morning when we boarded Avatar - the 40' Trimaran that was to be our home and transport for the next few days. She was beautiful! Two big nets (aka trampolines) one either side, which served as my resting place for the day and night! I slept on deck under the stars at nights - it was heavenly to fall asleep looking at the crystal clear stars and then to wake up to a stunning sunrise in front of me!
We did HEAPS of snorkelling and saw some really cool fish. Most exciting were the giant ones. We were snorkelling with fish 3' long! Also some large fish came up alongside the boat when we were anchored and I jumped in with some bread to have a play. At first they were fairly timid, but soon got their confidence and started nipping my bottom and hands!! There were 7 of them, so I started to feel a little outnumbered and exited the water!
The single pain about going in the water were the glamourous new fashion must-have of 'stinger suits'. Basically, it is "stinger season" in northern Queensland, which means all the real baddies are out in the water. I have to admit to not bothering with it sometimes as it got pretty hot and a dive off the edge of the boat got very tempting!
So that was the fun water part, oh I forgot to say the water was crystal clear too! We went to the famous Whitehaven Beach (voted one of the top 5 beaches in the world) It was beautiful here, and remided me of the Maldives because the sand was so white and water so clear. We spent the night just around the corner from here so were able to beat any other boats to the idyllic spot by 7am!
There is a lookout point too, a little bushwalk away from the beach.... this really did take my breath away! True picture postcard material! I will post some photographs for those of you who want to look and feel like you are in heaven! Unfortunately as we are heading further north the computers seem to be getting less sophisticated and so at the moment I can't post any of my pics.
So that was the beautiful part, and the fun part was that we had a fantastic, fun group on-board and it was great fun helping out with putting the sails up and all that sailor stuff! Also we raced other boats as we went along!
Lastly, it was so funny.... we went past a resort, which is over $4000 per night and I realised that one night there would pay for my trip!! Am not missing the luxuries, in fact quite like this roughing-it style!
Oh, one more thing - we are on Magnetic Island now and went to a big Full Moon Party last night on the beach - amazing music, fun times!
Lots of Easter Love, Tamara xx
