Tamara's Travels
6 people we had never met. 1 4x4 'troopie'. 2 tents. some food. a map, tide times and a first aid kit.....
.... sounds like something out of Surviver doesn't it!
Fleur and I went on a self-drive 3 day trip to Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world, which has heaps of freshwater lakes, rainforest, sandunes, ship wrecks, amazing vegetation and wildlife, and lots more.
We camped on the beach under the stars - saw the Milky Way really well, as well as lots of shooting stars. We toasted marshmallows over a campfire, drank warm white wine, dug holes in the sand for a 'bathroom', ran from Dingo's (wild dogs) and black snakes (most poisenous one ever!), swam with eels, camped with spiders, got bitten by huge flies the size of my big toe (I know cos one landed there!), nearly got stranded when the tide came in on us driving along the beach, and very nearly toppled the car over in the middle of a torrential storm while driving over very dodgy terrain! Dad, I think this even tops the driving we have done on Safari - though no lions circling our tent, or elephants stampeding through the site!!
We swam in a lake that was full of tea tree from the eucalyptus trees around it, as well as another, which had perfect sugar white sand with stunning green water and turtles in it. They came up to the surface and swam near us. We hiked through rainforest, and up sandunes (then rolled down them!), swung on vines and took lots of photographs!
All in all it was a fantastic experience - a real group effort, with no guide or anything. We all got on so well and have done lots together since.
ps my driving was great - for those of you who were wondering!!
