Our taxi to Santiago airport was an experience. The driver was mental! A 35 min journey took just 15 mins!
We hung with Oli and Sas before getting our flight. Whilst waiting, Oli bought Game of Thrones book 3 which I felt a bit smug about!
As we went through security, a frenzy followed us, which we later found out was this famous Latin singer called Mark Hunter (or something like that) - but he was like 16 and not even handsome!
Our flight was good as we had personal entertainment. I can't sleep sitting up so I watched Argo, How To Train Your Dragon, Hangover II and Eat, Pray, Love. But only after a big disrunance caused by a vet drunk French man (need I say any more?) he was so lathered that when he has a sneezing fit (like hundreds!) he didn't cover his moth or wake up. Snot was flying everywhere and it was just plain bizzare!! All these old ladies were shouting at him to cover his mouth. Then the flight attendants took his whiskey away, brought everyone mouth masks and moved the lady next to him to another seat. He did however end up having 2 window seats to himself...so maybe I should learn from him!
We arrived to a very warm welcome! Which was a huge shock after chile - I mean people actually smiled and made eye contact! It was so nice speaking English too, although I did have to stop myself from saying Gracias a few times!
We got a shuttle bus to our hostel for $20 each. As it was 4.30am Garth had got the code to enter the hostel. So we went on fb and then I slept on the sofa. At 8,30 the hostel woke up and we put out bags in a safe room and took turn walking around the area. At midday Duane (Garths friend from SWLV) came and met us to show us round Auckland. We visited the art gallery then walked right down to the dock where these huge industrial towers were beautifully painted, where old rail tracks were a feature in the pavement and where there were really cool little food stalls. We ate a kebab there. Walking back we popped into a fair where we saw some mauri dancing!
Duane then took us for a lovely drive along the coast, past mission bay, past st heliers beach where we thought we saw a washed up whale, we stopped to look only to find that it was an inflatable whale and they were training people!
We took a look at a monument with a beautiful view and enjoyed an Ice cream before walking around the old crater on mount Eden. The view was amazing!
Duane dropped us back at our hostel where we enjoyed a shower and a pot noodle before falling asleep at 7pm!
