Arrived on Fraser in the 4x4 and drove for miles along the beach!! Eventually stopped at a place known as Ely Creek, which was a creek running into a fresh water pool. We paddled, before setting off further down the beach!! Next stop was the Champagne Pools, basically a set of pools inside rocks which were filled by the waves crashing over the rocks!! Paddled again!!!
Next, (and finally!) it was my turn to drive!!! We then went to Indian Head to see some spectacular views of the coastline- everyone was looking for sharks... I didn't see any! Then it was some more fun 4x4 action as we headed to our campsite for the night. This was fenced so no need to worry about dingoes (which were plentiful on Fraser!) coming and disturbing us!! That evening we cooked with our car groups and partied into the night!!
Day 2- got up and drove our way to The Pinnacles... which was, as I remember it, a big rock!!! Then we went to a shipwreck that had grounded on the beach (its name escapes me!). After a stop agin at Ely Creek (and playing skimming with this ball the British lads had brought), we then headed off towards Lake McKenzie. On our way however, the Toyota overheated and we broke down!!!! Thankfully having flagged down the car behind us, our hero arrived... or not!! An Israeli dude from another car decided he knew all about cars and proceded to patronise anyone and everyone (us, the tour guide, even the mechanic when he arrived)... idiot!!!
After the mechanic patched the radiator up (it had a crack in it), we tentatively continued on to Lake McKenzie which, despite the increasingly chilly afternoon, was gorgeous. It was nearly completely clear and was beautiful. After a swim, we jumped back in the car and headed for our campsite for the second night... on the beach!!!
That night it rained as we cooked dinner, but then eased off afterwards as the Goon (cheap Australian wine) kicked in!! The partied the evening away with our own group of four cars and another tour and dingoes stalking the outskirts of our camp!!!
Next day, feeling a little the worse for wear, I played Dad and drove. We went to a place called Lake Wabby, which was a couple of kilometers inland (we had to walk!!) and was set next to some huge sand-dunes... apparently it will be gone in around 20 years cos the sand is slowly filling it in when tourists are walking the steep banks down towards it!! But hey... I've seen it so.......
Anyway, then I drove us back to the ferry and back to the hostel on the mainland! A great three days... some fantastic sights and great fun driving the 4x4!!
