One of the huge entry gates through the wall to enter old Sienna.

Looking through an archway at the end of one of the tiny Siena streets at the 'Mangia' Tower with the Cappella di Piazza, a 14th century tabernacle.

The elaborate marble fountain, Fonte Gaia, in the Piazza Del Campo (said to be one of the most distinctive squares in Italy). Most of the square is brick paved - we had our lunch sitting on the ground among many groups of young people. There are horse races around the Piazza a couple of times a year - very competitive among the locals they say.

This is one of the many magnificent mosaic pictures on the floor of the Siena Cathedral. They truly were exquisite and a point of difference from other mosaics we've seen on our travels. The cathedral, built in the 12th and 13th centuries is very similar to the Florence Santa Maria Cathedral and has a distinctive Romanesque black and white layered marble bell tower. The pillars inside the cathedral are also layered black and white marble.

Examples of the beautiful Majolica pottery found throughout Tuscany. David bought a couple of pieces and had them shipped home.
