I arrived at Byron Bay at 7:50am after a 12 hour journey on the coach. My friend Becky had messaged me to say that she was staying at the Cape Byron YHA so I got picked up by a guy working at the hostel and she'd left a message saying what room she was in so I checked into that room too. We caught up over a cuppa and then headed along the main road of Byron to explore. We popped into one of the travel agents and booked in for an afternoon's surfing lesson.
We got picked up by a minibus and there were people of different nationalities who were all really friendly. We had to play a couple of games and I sat next to a really nice German girl on the trip to Lennox Head beach, which was a really beautiful secluded beach.
On the beach we had to do some warm ups like running across the beach, jumping rope and stretches. We also learnt some surfing techniques and where to position our feet and how many paddles to do etc. We then headed to the sea. The waves were so huge and there were so many that I spent the first part being sucked under and using all my energy to get up again. It was really hard to get the timing right and propel myself onto the board. When the instructors came over to help it was so much better so I managed to get up on the board and managed a couple of seconds before being wiped out! We had a break half way through to catch our breath and watch the real pros out there and then we were back on it again. By the end of the day I had managed to get up a couple of times but was absolutely exhausted! It was really fun hanging out with everyone - there was about 10 people - and everyone was really fun and friendly. We got back to Byron about 5pm and then I chatted to a guy in one of the travel agents about my trip and he said that if I were to stay for another night he'd take me out for a tinny!
Becky's parents were at the hostel too as they're visiting her as she's been away for about 7 months so the four of us went out for some food. We went to a fish and chip restaurant and I had Australian salt and pepper prawns with home made chips and some BYO fizzy wine.
After we'd had dinner Becky and I found The Beach Hotel, which had been recommended by a lady in the bikini shop. As soon as we had got in there a guy came over and asked if we wanted somewhere to sit - as he was quite good looking we duly followed and started chatting to a group of 12 Aussie guys who were in Byron from Sydney who were on a stag do. As we are in Byron for the weekend it is definitely the place that Aussie's come to for a weekend away so there was a really good vibe. We spent a couple of hours in the bar with them and then went to a club called La La Land with a couple of Aussie girls too. A guy asked me if I was German as everyone he's met is from there, but when I told him I was from Brighton it turned out he was too.
